Risk world map 2025: Where vacationers should definitely be careful!

The “Risk Map 2025” offers a comprehensive overview of the safety of travel destinations and shows which destinations vacationers should avoid. Developed by the A3M Global Monitoring GmbH, the map can be accessed in the browser or downloaded as a PDF. The PDF document uses a color scale to represent each country's security situation. This important source of information is updated regularly and takes into account factors such as entry and exit conditions, political unrest, and natural and environmental hazards.

The security levels range from dark green, which means very low risk and allows travel without restrictions, to red, where travel is strongly discouraged. Between these two extreme levels, countries are divided into light green (low risk), yellow (potential risk) and orange (higher risk). The countries classified as safe to travel include Central Europe, Canada, the USA as well as Australia, Uruguay, Argentina, Namibia and Botswana. In contrast, Central Africa, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Myanmar, Syria, Ukraine and Russia are considered highly dangerous.

Particular uncertainties in 2025

Some areas have already been identified as particularly unsafe, including Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria, Yemen and Mali. Travelers are advised to consult the current risk world map and the Federal Foreign Office's travel and safety advice before planning a trip. The “Safe Travel” app from the Federal Foreign Office is available free of charge for Android and iOS and offers up-to-date information on risks in various countries.

The risk ratings are based not only on geopolitical conditions, but also take into account numerous other factors. These include, among other things, the availability of means of transport, the health situation in the target area and economic embedded risks such as corruption or industrial espionage. In addition, security in terms of violent crime and the threat of terrorism plays a crucial role when assessing travel destinations.

Responsible travel

For travelers planning to visit riskier areas, thorough precautions and safety concepts are essential. The “Risk Map 2025” recommends special anti-theft backpacks as a tool to keep valuables safe and prevent potential risks. Popular travel destinations such as Turkey, Tunisia and South Africa also have yellow risk ratings, indicating elevated but manageable risks.

Given the multitude of factors that influence the safety of a travel destination, it is even more important to start your adventure well informed. Vacation destinations that are considered safe not only provide a better travel experience but also a peace of mind for travelers.
