Hiking in Mauritius: Five hiking trails with breathtaking viewpoints
Hiking in Mauritius: Five hiking trails with breathtaking viewpoints
hiking in Mauritius is hot, stuffy and exhausting, but also absolutely worthwhile with some of the most beautiful viewpoints in the world.
hiking in Mauritius is like exploring Jurassic World, but without Chris Pratt and a wild dinosaurs in tow. The landscape offers sapphire blue water and powder white beaches, the rugged peaks overgrown with jungle, which excellent from sugar cane fields. It is the spectacular combs with unhindered viewpoints on the island in all its splendor, which offer the most beautiful hiking in Mauritius. We take a look at five of the best trails.
1. Macchabée-Weg
distance: 10km (6.2MI) Duration: 2-3 hourly difficulty: The most simple point: 652m (2.139ft)

Black River Gorges is the largest and most beautiful national park in Mauritius. It covers about 2 % of the island surface and is an essential part of the country's ecosystems. The MacChabée Trail offers a quick and easy hike through this wild region with steep hills and dense forest. The path runs from the LE Pétrin information center to the Black River visitor center over the picturesque viewpoint Macchabée - the perfect place for a picnic.
2. Le Pouce
distance: 4.3km (2.6MI) Duration: 2-3 hourly difficulty: slight to the highest point: 812m (2,664ft)
alt = "hike on Mauritius le pouce"> atlas & boots The moka range from Le Pouce
with 812 m (2,664 ft) is Le Pouce - or The Thumb, so called because of its thumb -shaped summit - the third highest mountain in Mauritius. It is located near the island capital Port Louis and offers an impressive view of the Moka Range, including the country's second highest summit, Pieter Both, with its uniquely shaped rock formation on the summit that resembles a human head.

3. Löwenberg
distance: 8.4 km (5.2 mi) Duration: 3-4 hourly difficulty: medium (some exposed via ferrata) highest point: 490m (1,607ft)
alt = “Hiking in Mauritius-Lion-Mountain”> Dream time The sphinx-like profile of the Lion Mountain dominates the southeast of the island
The distinctive sphinx-like profile of the Löwenberg dominates the southeast of the island. The hike is a challenging march along the lion's "back" to end on the "head". There are a few dangerous climbing over some rocky sections before reaching the plateau along the lion head. There hikers are rewarded with fantastic views across the inside of the island and coastal views to the south and east.
4. Le Morne Brabant
distance: 7 km (4.3mi) Duration: 3-4 hourly difficulty: medium (some exposed climbing parts) highest point: 490m (1,607ft)
alt = “hike on Mauritius le Morne”> Atlas & Boots The huge Le Morne Brabant seen from water
with 556 m (1,825 ft), Le Morne Brabant should not be a deterrent for the average hiker, but what he lacks in height adds through sheer mass. The mountain rises above the peninsula next to an "underwater water case" that can be seen from the sky (an optical deception caused by the drainage of sand and silt). Some exposed climbing passages ensure an intoxicating climb.

5. Piton de la petite riviere noire
distance: 7km (4.3mi) Duration: 3-4 hourly difficulty: Middle of the middle: 828m (2,717ft)
alt = “hike on Mauritius Piton”> dream time le Morne Brabant seen from the highest mountain on the island
The highest mountain on the island offers the best view of the southwestern peninsula, especially on the huge Le Morne Brabant and the surrounding waters. A well -maintained and well -signposted path serves the mountain, although the path in the rain (and often on Mauritius) can become very mushy. The mostly shady path begins near the viewpoint and the parking lot of the Black River Gorges and is regularly cleared. The last climb in front of the summit is short but intense.
hiking in Mauritius: The essentials
Was: Hiking in Mauritius: Five hiking trails with breathtaking viewpoints.
Where: We stayed in three different hotels in Mauritius and with a friend in the capital Port Louis. We recommend the following hotels because you offer all something else in unique areas on the island. Port Louis is worth a day trip (even if only to visit the "intoxicating" post museum), but it is probably not worth staying there - it is not the Mauritius for which you have come all the way!
- The Hotel Riu Le Morne, a hotel for adults, is located on the Le Morne peninsula and is ideal for Le Morne, the Macchabée and Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire.
- The Shandrani BeachComber Resort & Spa is located on a private peninsula on Blue Bay Marine Park and is therefore ideal for Lion Mountain.
- Trou aux Biches BeachComber on the northwest coast is a 40-minute drive from Le Pouce.
When: The best travel time for Mauritius is from October to April when the temperatures are hot, albeit moist and rainy. Note that hurricanes are possible from January to February. Winter on the island lasts from May to September. The temperatures are still warm, but the prevailing winds usually blow from the east and southeast over the island.
like: Use the card above to plan your hiking days on Mauritius. We rented a car at a locals in Port Louis named David (+230 59 5125 65) at a price of 800 Mur / 25 USD per day. Be sure to ask for air conditioning! Alternatively use rental cars to find the best offers on site.
transfers to all the hiking trails mentioned above can be organized via your hotel or a local driver. We recommend Stelio (+230 52 5084 97).
There are also buses that serve most of the island and are relatively easy to use, especially in the capital Port Louis. Use the Mauritius Buses website to plan a trip.
practice common sense when hiking on Mauritius: go early in the morning to avoid the stronger sun, hike with a partner, apply a lot of sunscreen, avoid hiking on rainy days because the paths can become very slippery, and take a lot of water with (min. 1.5 liters per person).
