The Moalboal Sardine Run: A unique experience in the Philippines
The Sardine Run in Moalboal is an impressive natural spectacle where millions of sardines migrate in huge schools along the coast of Panagsama Beach in Moalboal, Cebu. Visitors have the rare opportunity to swim and snorkel with the sardines just offshore, providing an unforgettable experience for any diving or snorkeling enthusiast.
Unlike the Sardine Run in South Africa, which takes place seasonally, in Moalboal you can swim with sardines all year round. The Sardine Run attracts many tourists every year and thus contributes to the region's economic boom.

What is the Moalboal Sardine Run?
You've heard of the famous sardines but don't know what it's about? In short, it is an opportunity to swim through huge schools of sardines just 20 meters from the shore at Panagsama Beach, Moalboal. Unlike the sardine run in Africa, in Cebu you can swim with the sardines 365 days a year, 7 days a week!
There are over 1 million sardines in each school. So snorkeling and swimming with the sardines in Moalboal is an incredible experience. You can swim through the schools as they surround you, blocking the light with their sheer numbers.

Moalboal is located about three hours from Cebu City on the southwest coast of Cebu. To get there, you can either take a public bus from the South Bus Terminal in Cebu City or book a private transfer. The bus ride costs around PHP 90 for a bus without air conditioning and PHP 110 for a bus with air conditioning. The bus companies Lebrando and Ceres Buses operate regular services to Moalboal.
Where to experience the Moalboal Sardine Run
The best place to experience the Moalboal Sardine Run is at Panagsama Beach. The sardines usually swim near the reef wall drop, about 20 meters from the shore. Enter the water from the beach and swim to the drop-off to find the sardines. If you have trouble spotting them, the flocks often hang out near the long yellow pier in front of Mana Pizzeria.
Best time to travel to the Moalboal Sardine Run
The best time to experience the Moalboal Sardine Run is during or just before the dry season, from November to May. During this time there are the best visibility and weather conditions for snorkeling and diving. The dry season in Cebu lasts from December to June, while the rainy season lasts from June to December.
Tip: Be sure to visit Pescador Island when you visit Moalboal. Here is the top-rated tour in the city.

Equipment and safety for snorkeling and diving at Moalboal Sardine Run
For snorkeling you need a mask, snorkel and fins. If you plan to spend extended periods of time in the water, consider wearing a wetsuit or rash guard to protect yourself from sunburn and possible scratches or stings from marine life. Divers require full diving equipment including a BCD, regulator, weight system, wetsuit, fins, mask and snorkel.
When snorkeling and diving, be sure to give the sardines enough space so as not to disturb their natural movements and behaviors. Do not touch the sardines or the reef to protect the environment and not to stress the animals. Remember to always have a diving or snorkeling buddy and check local weather and sea conditions before entering the water.
Where is Panagsama Beach?
Panagsama Beach is located on the southwest coast of Cebu, about three hours from Cebu City. It is one of Cebu's main tourist centers and diving centers.
The location is ideal for snorkeling and diving as it is the furthest east point and has some incredible reef drops just offshore.
While popularity and tourism are definitely increasing, there are still only a few cafes, restaurants, dive shops, bars and nightclubs. It definitely doesn't have an overflow feeling.

How to get to Panagsama Beach in Moalbaol?
Getting to Moalboal is usually fairly easy and inexpensive. That being said, figuring out the best transportation options can still be a bit of a task, especially if you've just arrived at the busy Mactan Airport.
Below are the best options to get to Panagsama Beach so you can experience the epic Moalboal Sardine Run.
Cheap local option
There is a public bus that often runs from Cebu to Panagsama Beach in Moalboal. It takes approximately three hours to get to Moalboal from the South Bus Terminal.

Don't miss the turtles
While snorkeling in Moalboal, you'll be hard-pressed to miss a turtle. There are several that feed on sea grass closer to shore.
This means you'll probably see one or two in the first few minutes of swimming out to the sardines.

Snorkel or dive in the Moalboal Sardine Run?
A common misconception is that you have to dive to see the Moalboal sardine run. This is completely wrong.
It is very easy to spot the sardines and they like to swim in 1-10 meters of water. This means snorkeling is actually better because you only see them from below when you want to dive.

But diving among the Moalboal sardines is also an incredible experience. You can watch them form shapes and block the sun with their huge flocks.
Do the locals fish for sardines?
Due to the tourism that the sardines bring to Moalboal, net fishing is illegal on Panagsama Beach. However, you will likely see small outrigger fishermen fishing at sunset.
The local community allows these fishermen to catch small quantities of the sardines to feed their families. A win for everyone.
