The Wonder of the Seas cruise ship made headlines when it canceled its trip to the Bahamas due to a violent incident on board. After just two hours of travel, the ship returned to the port of Miami around 6:40 p.m. after an argument at the children's pool escalated and turned into a fight, reported Picture.
The incident resulted in two injured passengers being transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Both were given medical attention but refused to press charges against each other. As a result of the altercation, around a dozen other people also had to leave the ship to be reinvestigated. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue were called in to assist.
Ship voyage interrupted
The five-day cruise only started on Monday afternoon. Much could be attributed to the captain's decision to turn back, particularly the rapidly escalating argument that quickly spiraled out of control. Rockstar shipping company Royal Caribbean International confirmed that it is working with local authorities and providing medical care to affected guests. At around 8:30 p.m. the ship docked at Port Miami, where the police immediately boarded.
Such incidents are not new on cruise ships, and similar fights have occurred in the past, such as the incidents on the Sunshine in August. The shipping company could now also examine criminal consequences for the disputers involved and possibly impose sanctions against them.
Continuation of the journey
Regardless of the chaotic situation, the journey for the remaining guests continued on Monday evening. However, the decision to turn the ship around showed the seriousness of the incident and underscored the challenges the cruise industry faces when it comes to safety and compliance on board.
