Iceland is again the most peaceful country in the world, followed by New Zealand, Ireland, Denmark and Austria.
However, the world is a somewhat less peaceful place, since the number of countries that experience violent internal conflicts has increased, as the latest Global Peace Index (GPI) shows.
Afghanistan remains the fourth year in a row that is the least peaceful country in the world, followed by Yemen, Syria, Russia and South Sudan.
The GPI report is the only statistical measure of its kind and enables 163 independent states to arrange how peaceful they are. The 163 countries cover over 99 % of the world population and are assessed using 23 indicators, each of which is banded or normalized on a scale of 1 to 5.

The index created by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) measures global peace on the basis of three major topics: the security level in society, the extent of national and international conflicts and the degree of militarization.
Peace is notoriously difficult to define. The IEP approaches him by trying to evaluate the "harmony that is achieved by the absence of violence or the fear of violence". Further information on the methodology, including details about the 23 indicators used, can be found on page 57 of the report.
