The slow decline

The gold deposits became increasingly exhausted and by 1881 most of the residents had left the city. At the beginning of the 20th century the mines became unprofitable and the busy streets of Bodie began to become deserted. In 1915 Bodie was officially recognized as a ghost town. A devastating fire in 1932 ultimately destroyed much of the remaining buildings.

Since the 1940s, Bodie has been preserved in a state of “arrested decay”; the buildings have been left as they were when they last lived, as if time had stood still. In 1961, Bodie was designated a National Historic Landmark District and a year later Bodie State Historic Park. The aim of these measures was to preserve the history of the city and its approximately 100 remaining buildings.

Ghost stories and tourism

The ghost town not only has a fascinating history but also diverse haunted stories that attract visitors. Ghosts of former residents reportedly appear in Bodie, including the ghost of a three-year-old girl named Evelyn and a Chinese maid at the J.S. Cain House. An angelic spirit is also said to have been seen in Bodie Cemetery.

Another well-known aspect of Bodie is the “Bodie Curse,” which states that taking items out of town brings bad luck. Many visitors bring back stolen artifacts to break this curse and improve their luck. Despite these eerie stories, Bodie remains a popular destination for history lovers and adventurers looking to explore the ghost town and its memories.
