Bad Vöslauer's thirst for adventure: Kurt Sasshofer's impressive dream trips
Reported on June 10, 2025 MyDistrict about the passionate traveler Kurt Sasshofer from Bad Vöslau, who has been exploring extraordinary travel destinations around the world for decades. He documents his adventures and experiences with an impressive collection of 300,000 images, ranging from slides to digital photos.
Kurt Sasshofer sees his travels as “dream trips” defined by beautiful landscapes, adventures and cultural experiences. No two trips are the same because he is always looking for unique experiences. When planning his trips, he relies on specialized tour operators to find the best destinations around the world.
India as a fascination
Sasshofer is particularly often drawn to India, where he has made over 20 trips. India offers him an incomparable combination of beautiful nature, exciting adventures and deep culture. In 2023, he took part in the Kumbh Mela, the world's largest religious festival that takes place every 12 years. This festival attracts over 660 million people who come from all over India and the world to take part in the sacred rituals and purify their souls. Kumbh Mela symbolizes religious faith and is viewed by believers as an opportunity for sin purification and spiritual renewal.
The Kumbh Mela is held at four significant locations in India: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. These places all have a special astrological significance that plays a role in the organization of the festival. Participants believe that they can achieve salvation by participating in the ceremonies and rituals.
Challenges and experiences
The logistical planning of the Kumbh Mela poses a huge challenge. More than 140 mobile hospitals and 150,000 toilets will be provided, while 30 pontoon bridges will have to be constructed across the holy Ganges to cope with the increased influx of people. In addition to these challenges, Sasshofer also experiences adventures in nature, such as tiger safaris in four Indian national parks or trekking tours, including circumnavigating the sacred Mount Kailash in Tibet.
However, his travel experiences are not limited to India. Sasshofer also visited the Lut desert in Iran, which he describes as the hottest place on earth, where temperatures reach up to 78 degrees Celsius. Chile, with its breathtaking landscapes including deserts, active volcanoes and glaciers, was also among his destinations. One of his most striking experiences was the passage in the Drake Passage, where 12 meter high waves tested his ship.
To stay fit for his travels, he regularly discovers the hiking trails in the Vöslau Forest. His goal is to continue discovering new cultures and continuing his travels while exploring the beauty of this world.
