Packing list Antarctic: Everything you need for your polar adventure

A click-and-pick antarctic pack list with links to certain products that were personally tested by Atlas & Boots

A friend of mine recently asked me which three things make me happiest as part of her research for her upcoming book. I called family and nature, which is pretty standard answers. My third choice of Hygge, the Danish concept of cosiness, was less common.

We hear a lot about wellness, fitness and mental health, but very little about the body's diet on the tactile level. I explained that I love to wrap myself in soft fabrics and fluffy blankets, and I can't understand why we use these materials to calm babies and toddlers, but then switch to jeans and stiff, starchy clothing when we are older. In short: I love it warm and cozy.

Against this background, you can understand why I approached my Antarctic pack list with an insane zeal bordering on the seventh continent. I read the FAQs and packing lists of all large companies that sail in the Antarctic, studied countless blog posts and read a lot of reviews.

praise, because I did a damn well: I managed to stay warm and comfortable on the coldest continent on earth. I present my Antarctic pack list so that you can do the same with a fraction of the pain.

Packing list Antarctic

My packing list for the Antarctic is based on a 10-day expedition and is divided into expedition clothing, accessories, on-board clothing, transit clothing, toilet items, basics and electronics. Where relevant, I inserted on the left too exactly what I packed. The sheer selection of outdoor clothing can be confusing, so I did the difficult part for you. The list has a female crooked, but most of the linked equipment have a male equivalent.

It is also useful to know that I chose Helly Hansen (HH) because it is the brand that bears the expedition team on the trips of Albatros Expeditions. HH is based in Norway - the home of polar research - and has been making professional equipment for more than 140 years. As such, I thought they were a sure thing - and in fact they kept me thoroughly roasted.

layers are the key to stay warm in the Antarctic, so make sure that you pack the lower, medium and external layers. It is unlikely that you will have to pack a hard -wearing parka because most companies deliver one by default.

  • Unterwirts x 2 (HH 1/2 zipper, hh crew) - I love this
  • Midlayer-Tops X 2 (HH Daybreaker, HH Insulator)
  • External layers x 2 (HH down jacket, hh sailing jacket)-one of them may be enough, but I like to wear my down jacket on particularly cold days under my official Albatros expeditionsparka and my sailing jacket on warmer days on deck
  • Functional underwear x 2 (HH Lifa merino pants in two different colors; Peter loves smartwool functional underwear)
  • midlayer panties x 1 (HH Daybreaker fleecehose)
  • Waterproof sub -parts X1 (HH Aden Rain Pants)

clothing on board

The evening dress code on Antarctic expeditions is absolutely casual. Think of fleece, sweater, west and hoodies. Sneakers and hiking shoes are completely acceptable. We saw a passenger in a blazer, but that's it!

  • casual tops x 2
  • fleece leggings x 2 (CRZ yoga in two different colors)-these look better in real life and I adore them
  • jeans x 1
  • Trainer X 1 (HH Feathering Trainer)

transit clothing

This is a strange category that I know, but it is worth noting that if you travel from Argentina to the Antarctic, like most passengers, you will probably drive through Buenos Aires, where we had temperatures of 35 ° C (95 ° C). It will be summer in the southern hemisphere, so it is worth packing the following if you will spend some time in the capital.

  • Summer outfits x 2
  • Ballerinas or flip-flops x 1
  • Small handbag x 1
  • comfortable outfit for flight x 1

toilet article

Do not do without the sunscreen. Antarctic may be the coldest continent in the earth, but the sun is deceptive.

  • toothbrush
  • toothpaste
  • deo
  • facial laundry
  • moisturizer
  • Batiste dry shampoo- you will go in and out of your cabin on a few full days, so you will appreciate dry shampoo for refreshing weather-tanned hair
  • make-up, petreline, hairpins, safety needles
  • sunscreen

basics

Two comments here. First, take your entire cash in USD and exchange it into the state currency as soon as you are in Argentina. The country's "Blue Dollar" course means that you get much more for your money compared to withdrawing the ATM or for paying with a card. This is particularly useful if you spend a few days in Buenos Aires or Ushuaia. Everything on board is probably cashless (with the exception of drinking money that you may want to give in addition to the tip that your invoice is added by default).

second: When it comes to seasickness, preventiveity is better than healing. So if you tend to seasickness, take medication before you feel sick (of course with medical advice). There will be a board doctor who can also deliver medication.

electronics

  • Telephone and charger
  • Telephone frame-this is useful to keep your phone safely so that it does not fall overboard on the Zodiac cruises (unfortunately I have not packed up one, but this Takyu Hänband is well rated)
  • Notebook and charger
  • Kindle and charger
  • adapter (ceptics) - our cabin had British sockets, so we didn't need an adapter, but maybe you want one for Buenos Aires and Ushuaia
  • camera and accessories
  • SIM card (Keepgo)-In Ushuaia and the rest of Argentina we remained online with Keepgo, which is combined with local 4G networks in over 100 countries (with our recommendation link you get a 10 % discount)

Antarctic pack list: What should stay at home

  • hair dryer - your cabin will most likely have one
  • hard -wearing hiking shoes - your expedition company probably delivers waterproof boots for land excursions, so check this before packing them up
  • hard -wearing parka - your expedition company will probably provide one, so check it before packing a
  • Formal clothing - evenings are completely casual matters
