Bach's Journey to China: A musical adventure for the senses!

On May 31, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., a special event entitled “J.S. Bach's journey to China” will take place in Vohenstrauß. This event, organized by the Vohenstrauß parish and the EBW, invites everyone interested to find out more about the life and art of Johann Sebastian Bach. The entry price is 10 euros and registration is required at ebw.oberpfalz@elkb.de or on 09622 6079426.

The event highlights the interesting connection between J.S. Bach and Chinese culture. The focus is particularly on Bach's trip to China, which takes place in a historical context. At this time, Bach was looking for new musical influences after his application to Leipzig was initially unsuccessful. During his stay in China he had significant encounters with the Chinese Emperor Kangxi, Jesuit priests and various local musicians.

Artistic performances and improvisations

A highlight of the event will be the various musical contributions. Movements from Bach's famous cello suites as well as solos for GuZheng, duo pieces for pipes & cello and chamber JAZZ music are presented. In addition, improvisations and world music are presented, taking the audience on a journey through music and culture. Renowned artists have been recruited for the performances: Zhiyuan Luo from Beijing and Leipzig will play the GuZheng, while Ulrich Thiem from Dresden will be the narrator and can be heard on the cello and artificial pipes.

This encounter between East and West is also reflected in the overall message of the event. It offers a deep insight into the cultural similarities that both J.S. Bach and Emperor Kangxi, known as “The Son of the Dragon”. Emperor Kangxi was not only a pioneering emperor, but also a promoter of culture in many ways. His commitment to education and culture had a lasting impact on Chinese society and thus represents an interesting parallel to Bach's influence on Western music.

The power of music

As in the show “The Power of the Dragon”, which presents a journey through Chinese cultural history, the event in Vohenstrauß also makes it clear how lively music, history and culture are interwoven. In both contexts—the dynamic development of Bach's music through the centuries and the cultural flourishing under Emperor Kangxi—it is clear that the emotions of music speak a universal language that connects people across cultures.

In summary, the event “J.S. Bach's Journey to China” promises to be an extraordinary experience that not only takes visitors into the world of classical music, but also highlights the relevance of Bach in today's world. Organized by the Vohenstrauß parish, it offers an excellent space for music lovers, those interested in culture and anyone who is enthusiastic about the fascinating connections between East and West.
