Berlin, the fourth largest tourism city in Europe, experienced a remarkable recovery in the hotel and hospitality industry in 2024. The capital of the Federal Republic of Germany recorded over 30 million overnight stays, an increase of 3.4% compared to the previous year. In all of 2024, 12.7 million guests visited Berlin, an increase of 5.2%. This shows that the city is becoming increasingly important as a travel destination. Mayor Franziska Giffey highlighted Berlin's continued attractiveness and emphasized that one in seven international overnight stays in Germany occurs in the capital.
Loud hotelinside.ch 4.7 million international guests came to Berlin, securing over 10% more overnight stays in 2024. Particularly notable was the increase in guest numbers from China and India, which increased by 38% and 26% respectively. The main reasons for staying in the city are the sights as well as the art and cultural offerings, which make Berlin particularly attractive for many travelers.
Guests and market analysis
The number of international guests holidaying rose to 42%, with Great Britain, the USA and the Netherlands being the largest countries of origin. 1.4 million British tourists stayed in Berlin in 2024, followed by 930,000 from the Netherlands and 747,000 from Italy. 1.3 million traveled to the US and there was a 10.1% increase in overnight stays.
The Berlin hotel industry is modern and innovative, with individuality and sustainability becoming increasingly important. The largest hotel in the city is the Estrel with 1,125 rooms. The average occupancy of available rooms was 71% in 2024. In parallel, operating costs in the hotel industry increased by 10%, while operating costs decreased by 23%. Revenue from the hotel industry achieved a total turnover of 16.9 billion euros in 2024 and employs 11% of Berlin's population.
Current developments in 2025
In January and February 2025, Berlin already welcomed around 1.6 million guests, who recorded a total of 3.7 million overnight stays. This corresponds to a decrease of 1.9% compared to the previous year. The data shows a falling number of German guests (down 1.6%), while the number of international guests increased by 3.3%, resulting in a total of 2.0% more overnight stays. In February 2025 in particular, Berlin recorded 857,046 new guests and 1,985,540 overnight stays.
At the end of February, the accommodation facilities included 721 hotels that offered a total of 145,274 beds. However, the average guest bed occupancy from January to February was only 43.5%. The city's tourism infrastructure remains stable and the expected trends show that Berlin remains a sought-after travel destination.
