Vietnamese to China without a visa? These are the latest rules!

A lot of information has recently emerged about the entry conditions to China and Vietnam. Vietnamese tourists in particular who are planning a trip to China should carefully inform themselves about the current regulations. According to Vietnam reports, Vietnamese tourists checked in at Fenghuang Old Town in May 2023. However, false information is circulating on social media that these tourists can fly directly to China without a visa. Travel agents warn that such information is misleading and could lead to serious problems at entry.

A representative of the tour operator Shengshi Yiyou clarifies that the wording “no visa required” is often published incompletely and the reality is more complex. Vietnamese tourists are only exempt from visa requirements if they travel to certain locations in China and comply with special conditions. From April 2023, Vietnamese tourists will be allowed to travel to Guilin in Guangxi province without a visa, but only as part of a package tour offer.

Travel to China requiring a visa

This regulation applies to groups of two or more people taking part in a trip organized by approved travel agencies in China. Entry and exit must take place via Guilin Liangjiang International Airport and the stay is limited to a maximum of 144 hours, i.e. six days. A similar visa exemption scheme for groups from ASEAN countries has been in place since 2015.

From February 2025, Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province will also allow visa-free entry for citizens of ten ASEAN countries, including Vietnam. Tourists are allowed to enter and exit through Xishuangbanna Gasa International Airport and stay in the Xishuangbanna administrative region for a maximum of six days. This region is known for its jungles, water festivals and the cultural peculiarities of the Thai ethnic groups.

Vietnamese entry requirements

In Vietnam itself, the country has extended visa-free entry until March 14, 2028. Visitors from a total of twelve countries can enter without a visa and stay for up to 45 days. Eligible countries include Germany, Denmark and Great Britain. A temporary visa-free regime applies to travelers from the Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland until December 31, 2025. In order to further modernize the entry system, Vietnam will introduce an e-visa that allows a stay of up to 90 days and can be applied for online.

The aim of these entry regulations is to boost tourism and strengthen economic ties. Vietnam receives around 18 million tourists annually, which underlines the relevance of these measures.

The ever-changing visa requirements in both Vietnam and China can pose a challenge for travelers. In particular, the issuance of Chinese tourist visas remains unpredictable, often resulting in overloaded applications and more stringent processing procedures.

Current developments show how important it is for tourists to obtain timely and comprehensive information about entry requirements in order to avoid possible difficulties when planning their trips.
