The 10 most unoriginal expat destinations
The 10 most unoriginal expat destinations
Are you an American manager in Germany, a British teacher in Spain or an Indian businessman in the Emirates? Then, I'm afraid, according to the 2014 Expat Insider Report 2014, they are one of the most unoriginal expats in the world.
We examined the report and selected the top 10 most popular expat destinations and compared them with the Expat insider rankings for overall satisfaction. Interestingly, only three countries appear on both lists (USA, Switzerland and Spain), which indicates that many expats in a different country than their choice could find a better quality of life.
If you think about beating the sticks faster and starting a new life, you may think about avoiding the obvious and choose something else ... like Ecuador, Indonesia or the Czech Republic, all of which were recently placed under the top 20 for the satisfaction of expats (see graphic below).

Safe and protected Germany is the power center of the EU and therefore attracts a large number of expats in relation to its population, which makes it the most popular choice for expats overall. On the overall list of satisfaction, however, the country only ranks in 12th place. Weather and the climate could also be a little better.
2. USA

Gender: 62 % female vs. 38 % male age average: 39.6 years 7 % average working time: 42 hours/week
The USA is 5th place on the overall satisfaction list and are one of only three countries that made it into the top 10 of both lists (Switzerland and Spain are the others). The Europeans are still flocking into the new world and are generally satisfied. However, you have to work out for a long and hard with a high average weekly working time.
3. United Arab Emirates

4. Switzerland

Despite the weather and the cost of living, old Blighty still ranked quite well on the overall satisfaction list (position 21). As long as you are happy to live ahead of the real estate manager and wear an umbrella every day, you will be happy in Great Britain. Travel opportunities in the EU are unlimited and close trade relationships support promises of employment.
6. China

8. Netherlands
Gender: 69 % female vs. 31 % male age average: 36 years of average working time: 38.2 hours/week
Education, work and transport connections make the Netherlands a coveted place for expats. Language barriers are not a problem for British and Americans because so many local companies based there speak English. The country lies on the overall list of satisfaction in 23rd place.
9. Spain

Spain is the last of the three countries that made it under the top 10 in both lists, and occupies the 7th place in the overall satisfaction and the 9th place in the most popular expats. Despite economic and employment problems, Spain is still an extremely popular destination for expats among Europeans.
10. Belgium
Gender: 63 % female vs. 37 % male average age: 37.6 years of % average working time: 40.3 hours/week
Belgium is not an extreme country and is in 29th place out of 60 for overall satisfaction. As the seat of the power and politics of the EU, the country is a comfortable (but not the most inspiring) choice for expat destinations.
