3 waterfalls that must have been seen near Chiang Rai, Thailand
For many backpackers and travelers in Nordthailand, a stopover in Chiang Rai is often only a short stopover, either just a stopover to Chiang Mai or around the famous white temple. My goal is to convince you to skip the typical one -day city trip and to really explore this epic jewel of the north. A great beginning is to look at these 3 epic waterfalls near Chaing Rai!
What many people don't know about Chiang Rai is that it is a hotspot for jungle trekking and other epic outdoor adventures. In fact, Chiang Rai has some of the best waterfalls in Thailand. You may be just as surprised as I will find a huge, over 70 m deep waterfall at the end of epic jungle hiking trails, just a stone's throw away from the city.
Map of the waterfalls near Chiang Rai
To help you find the waterfalls listed in this blog near Chiang Rai, I have attached a card with your exact locations. It is possible to master most of these waterfalls in a single day trip. As you can see, however, they are somewhat apart. I would propose to divide it to at least two days.
For detailed waterfall leaders, I also wrote separate articles for all these waterfalls in Chiang Rai. You can find the links to these under each heading.

Well, let's go into it. Here is the first of these three epic waterfalls near Chiang Rai; Mae Sai waterfall.
At the end of a picturesque street lined with tea plantations and rice fields, the Mae Sai waterfall does not hous one, but two waterfalls with swimming holes and even an insidious waterfall cliff jump!
The journey here takes about 35 minutes by Chiang Rai, and you will probably have this entire two -stage waterfall on its own!
For exact details about how you come here and what you can expect, read the full waterfield guide here.

2. Huay Kaew waterfall
If you want to visit two waterfalls near Chiang Rai in one day, it is good to add the Huay Kaew waterfall to your travel route to take a full -day trip.
This is much less known than the other waterfalls from Chiang Rai and was recently opened for tourism. Similar to the Mae Sai waterfall, it is relatively quiet all year round. The only people we met during our visit to the high season was a group that stopped here at the end of a two-day trekking and mining tour.
similar to Mae Sai, Huay Kaew has two primary levels. However, there is no falling waterfall here, rather a larger, cascading river on both levels. You can relax and cool down by swimming in both places where a flat fresh water pool on the foot of both waterfalls is waiting for you. There are also a few geothermal hot springs in the area, which is a worthwhile addition to your waterfall day trip.
The hike to the Huay Kaew waterfall takes about 5 minutes for the lower level and 10 minutes to reach the top level. Just follow the path and you won't miss it!
Again, for all details, read the complete instructions here.

3. Khun-Korn waterfall
Some say it is better to lift the best until the end! Visiting the Khun Korn waterfall was the highlight of my trip to Chiang Rai and actually my favorite water in Nordthailand! I let the photos speak, but this one is a really impressive waterfall that falls into a beautiful jungle amphitheater oasis from a height of over 70 meters.
The short but worthwhile 3-kilometer long and return hike to this waterfall from Chiang Rai through banana fields and bamboo forests is also quite magical.
In my opinion, if you only visited a waterfall near Chiang Rai, make it Khun Korn Waterfall!

It is no secret that Chiang Rai can get very hot! However, if you come to the right season, you will find refreshing weather and flowing waterfalls.
The best time to visit Chiang Rai waterfalls is between October and February. This season is known as a cool season, with a clear sky, occasional evening showers and much more bearable temperatures.
Although it is considered a cool season, you can still expect temperatures in the low 30s!
August and September are considered the wet months in Nordthailand. So if you visit the waterfalls near Chiang Rai during this time, pay attention to raging currents!
How to come to Chiang Rai
The easiest way to get to Chiang Rai is by bus. If you come from Chiang Mai, you have to go to the Arcade Bus Station. The journey should not cost more than 50 baht for a local Songthaew.
The entire trip takes about four hours, which is quite comfortable and usually includes a short stop.
There are several buses that run daily, but the buses are fully booked in more oral times. The cheapest and best buses are green buses. I would propose to compare the prices and book in advance at 12 Go Asia.
Transportation in Chiang Rai
Before you break up for your waterfall hunts, you may ask yourself: "How do I get there?" As I briefly mentioned above, the best way is to get to all these waterfalls in Chiang Rai, rent a motorcycle and drive here.
While you can take part in organized tours and pay private drivers, here are a few reasons why you should make it independent in my opinion;
- The mountain roads of Chiang Rai are beautiful and are seriously underestimated
- You have more time to explore yourself without feeling rushed
- Chiang Rai is much less busy than Chiang Mai; These streets are great to build their self -confidence on Thai streets
- renting a motorcycle is often much cheaper than paying for a tour or a driver!
If you are looking for a motorcycle for rent, I would suggest either spending the night in the Grace Hostel or contacting the owner. She is super friendly and offers great, competitive prices for motorcycle rentals in Chiang Rai.
await you, depending on the season and bike type, about 150-250 baht a day.
