Dat Taw Gyaint Waterfall, also known as Anisakan Falls, is a magical waterfall with a blue, natural and refreshing swimming hole. Nestled in the bottom of a jungle gorge, this waterfall sits next to a small temple and is one of the best hidden gems in Myanmar.

If you are visiting Mandalay or Pyin Oo Lwin then I highly recommend you to opt for the half-day trip to this must-visit waterfall in Myanmar. In this guide I will detail how to get here and what to expect once you arrive.

Book your trip to Mandalay

Book cheap flightsAre you still in the planning phase of your trip? Currently, the best and easiest way to find cheap flights is to use a flight price search engine like Momondo and Skyscanner. You are guaranteed to always find the cheapest flight between the two, anywhere in the world.

TIP:If you're flexible with your time, search for "Full Month" to see a calendar result with the cheapest days to fly. Book your accommodationWhether you're looking for hostels, hotels, guesthouses or resorts between Booking.com and Agoda, you'll always get the best deals. I always search using the map feature to find accommodation in the best places. Sometimes when I want to stay in one place for a little longer, I use Airbnb.

TIP: For the best hostels, I usually compare reviews on Hostelworld and then check other booking sites to compare prices and deals. Book Tours and TransportationYou already know that I prefer independent travel. Sometimes the best and cheapest way to get things done is to simply book a tour or package. For Myanmar I always use Klook and Viator. By far the cheapest way to get from place to place in Myanmar is long-distance buses. For the latest prices and routes, visit 12GoAsia. Don't forget adventure travel insurance If you're reading this blog, you're probably looking for adventure while sipping poolside. After my entire bag was stolen in Barcelona, I vowed to always take out travel insurance. My two favorite options for adventure travelers are SafetyWing and World Nomads. How to get to Dat Taw Gyaint Waterfall (Anisakan Falls).

Dat Taw Gyaint waterfall is located on the road from Mandalay to Pyin Oo Lwin near a small village called Anesakhan. As is common with Burmese to English translations, there are a variety of ways to spell these names using the English alphabet. To reflect its home village, this waterfall has earned a more commonly used nickname: Anisakan Falls. However, you will notice that the waterfall has somehow been given a different spelling.

Regardless, finding this waterfall is easy if you connect: Dat Taw Gyaint Waterfall on Google Maps. Or simply follow the pin instructions below.

Rent a motorbike

The best way to explore the region between Mandalay and Pyin Oo Lwin is to rent a motorbike and drive yourself here. You can rent a motorbike in Myanmar by speaking to your hotel staff or owner. They will usually point you in the right direction.

Anesakhan and Dat Taw Gyaint Waterfall is located just 9 km south of Pyin Oo Lwin on Highway 3 (Road to Mandalay). Therefore, it is the perfect short half-day trip from Pyin Oo Lwin. The drive is fairly easy, along a single lane highway with little traffic.

For those coming from Mandalay you will have a much longer drive of 1.5 hours. However, if you are confident, I recommend you take on the challenge of seeing this epic waterfall.

For adventurous readers looking for a full day waterfall trip, I would recommend also visiting Dee Doke Waterfall. You can cram both waterfalls on a great day trip from Pyin Oo Lwin.

Tip: If you plan to stay in Pyin Oo Lwin, I recommend you stay at The Tha Ha Zar Ta Hotel. These guys will sort you out with your set of wheels.

Take a taxi or grab to Anesakhan

Since Dat Taw Gyaint Waterfall is just a stone's throw from Pyin Oo Lwin, it is possible to take a taxi or drop you off at Anesakhan Village. The Google Maps pin below is a good place to descend as you will have to walk the rest of the journey to the waterfall.

Waterfall hike

After parking your motorcycle or dropping it off at the top parking lot, it's a 40-minute hike downhill to the base of the gorge to reach the waterfall. Apparently there are a few small food stalls and vendors selling snacks and water along the way. However, they were abandoned when I visited them in the hot dry season.

The path down to Dat Taw Gyaint waterfall is clearly marked and winds down the steep cliff before finally reaching the waterfall.

The hike isn't too strenuous, but make sure to save some energy on the way back uphill!

What to Expect at Dat Taw Gyaint Waterfall

Dat Taw Gyaint Waterfall was one of the best highlights of my trip to Myanmar. Three beautiful cascades cascade down the limestone cliffs to form a large waterfall. Below you will find a deep swimming pool with milky turquoise water, comparable to the famous Kawasan Falls in the Philippines.

Next to the swimming pool there is a large rock that is great for sunbathing. The water in the waterfall pool is deep enough for swimming, but not deep enough for cliff jumping.

Dat Taw Gyaint waterfall height

Anisakan Falls or Dat Taw Gyaint Waterfall rises over 120 meters in height at the foot of the jungle gorge.

Dat Taw Gyaint Buddhist Temple

There is a small Buddhist temple next to the waterfall. After seeing Dat Taw Gyaint waterfall first hand, I know why they chose this place as the location for their temple.

When I came to visit during the hot season, the monks told me that I was the first foreigner in months! It just goes to show what a unique and underrated gem Myanmar really is!
