From above, hikers have a wide view of the highest mountains in the world, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, the Gokyo Valley and Lakes as well as the largest Himalaya glacier: the Ngzumpa glacier.

I wrote this travel guide for Gokyo Ri, Sagarmatha National Park as part of a voter for Mount Everest Base Camp and Three High Passes Trek. Therefore, this guideline from Gokyo Village takes up. If you are looking for a detailed trekking blog and guide for the three passes, you can read the days 13-15 of the hike to Gokyo.

About the Gokyo Ri Sagarmatha National Park

Gokyo Ri is a summit in the Khumbu region, which is located next to the city of Gokyo, directly west of the Ngozumpa glacier. Although it is one of the best viewpoints that can be reached without climbing, many miss him because they prefer the increasingly overcrowded Everest Base Camp Trail.

While the altitude would be a large peak elsewhere, you have to keep in mind that you are in the Himalaya. Compared to the surrounding Himalayan giants, Gokyo Ri is considered a hill than as a trekking summit.

During my time while trekking in the Nepalese Himalaya was Gokyo Ri my favorite viewpoint. Many hikers actually use Gokyo Ri as the target for their Khumbu hikes. In fact, the Gokyo Lakes Trek quickly develops into the most popular EBC alternative.

Since I draw most of my experiences from the three-pass trek, I don't have much knowledge of the sections that lead from Lukla to Gokyo. For detailed instructions you can purchase the eBook "Lonely Planet: Trekking in the Nepal Himalaya".

Gokyo Ri Höhe

The height of the Gokyo Ri is 5360 meters. This means that Trekker, who run from Gokyo (4790 m), have to overcome 570 meters of altitude to reach the summit of the Gokyo Ri.

Gokyo Ri Trek difficulty level

In terms of the difficulty of the Gokyo Ri trek, Himalaya relationships are considered a fairly simple viewpoint. If you say that, you will still hike at great altitude and have to acclimatize properly. Trekking to the summit of the Gokyo Ri does not require technical training or equipment. The path is not extremely steep, but has a constant slope throughout the duration, so general fitness is required.

If you have already walked all the way to Gokyo, you will not have a problem to reach the summit of the Gokyo Ri, provided you have followed the right acclimatization strategies.

How long does it take to reach the summit of the Gokyo Ri?

await you 3 hours to reach the tip of the Gokyo Ri from the village of Gokyo, and closer to 2 hours for relegation. This time depends on how often they stop and at what speed they go.

Gokyo Ri detour on the Three Passes Trek

The hike to the summit of the Gokyo Ri is one of the best detours offered on the Three High Passes Trek. I would not really call it an acclimatization migration if you hike clockwise because you have already acclimatized well at heights over 5000 meters. However, if you try the three passes clockwise, it would be a good warming up in front of Cho La. However, you have to make sure that you are physically ready for the great height.

Gokyo Ri-Map

Unfortunately, there is no high quality and reliable Gokyo Ri card that is available online free of charge. However, if you hike in the Khumbu, you have to take a physical card with you anyway. You can buy the best Gokyo-Ri card online, which contains details about the Gokyo lakes, the entire three-high passport trek and the Everest Base camp trek. Otherwise you can pick up one in Thamel in every trekking business.

Travel insurance for the Gokyo Ri Sagarmatha National Park

For most trekker who want to hike to Gokyo Ri, travel insurance is at the top of their list of priorities. However, many travel insurance do not cover trekking at heights over 4000 meters.

I always buy travel insurance at Worldnomads.com because I think they are the best for adventure travelers. They are one of the few companies that covers trekking at such high heights as Gokyo Ri.

The Gokyo Ri Trail from Gokyo

It is really impossible to miss the Gokyo Ri Trail from the village of Gokyo. You see the towering hill right next to the main lake. Leave your backpacks in a Gokyo Lodge and start the hike by crossing a small, rippling river and gently bouncing over the stones.

Immediately after the river, signs the way to the rear lakes, the Renjo la Pass and of course Gokyo Ri.

The path begins to climb almost immediately, and they meander all the time with about the same climb. During the walk you can turn around at any time to get an incredible view of the village of Gokyo and Gokyo Lake.

on the way you can also see dozens of Himalaya snacks that wack around the path.

reaching the tip

If you approach the summit, you will take a first look at the worn but shimmering prayer flags that are wrapped around the summit. This last section is often covered with snow. However, you will see a deep path that was carved into the snow from the hundreds of trekkers who hike to the Gokyo Ri every season.

push yourself forward and take the time to adapt to the rapid increase in height. After about 3 hours on foot you can reach the tip of the Gokyo Ri, where you will see huge black boulders, which rest on shimmering snow and as far as the eye can see, are wrapped in prayer flags.

Gokyo Ri views

Gokyo Ri is considered one of the best prospects in the Khumbu and therefore probably all over the world. It is also one of the best places to catch a glimpse of the highest mountain in the world: Mount Everest.

In addition to Everest, you can also see Lhotse (8,516 meters), Cho Oyu (8,188 meters), Makalu (8,485 meters) and several other distant Tibetan peaks.

Right in the east you have an incredible view of the Ngozumpa glacier, which makes its way through the Gokyo Valley. If you look down, Gokyo Village and his lakes are not much more than a stain in the grand panorama.
