Flights from and to Bangkok and Phuket are usually the cheapest in Thailand. Fortunately, there are also several buses that drive from Phuket and Bangkok and are connected to Koh Tao via a bus.

The best beaches on Koh Tao

I spent a little more than two months on Koh Tao to complete my Dive Master program, so I had a lot of time to explore these beaches and make a good call that would be on the list. Remember that this list has no specific order and depends on what you are looking for.

1. Haibucht (Haad Thien Strand)

Shark Bay is located on the south side of Koh Tao. This beach is famous for its snorkeling and the black-top reef sharks, which visit the shallow spots in the early morning. If you want to swim with the sharks, read this post in which you describe in detail how and when you have to visit this beach.

The actual beach (Haad Thien Beach) is privately owned by the resort. You can either drive to the resort and pay for admission or simply enter the bay over the stairs on the cliff. The best way to the beach is to go to the OK2 bungalows and go down the ramp on the cliff until you reach the water.

As soon as they are on the water, a bamboo leader leads over the rugged rocks on the side of the bay. You can either relax as soon as you have reached the smooth rocks and snorkel or continue in the bay to make a few small cliff jumps of 2 to 3 meters.

2. Freedom beach

Freedom Beach is one of my favorite beaches on Koh Tao. This small, protected, white sandy beach has epic turquoise water and a quiet surf atmosphere without waves. A few hammocks hang from the trees directly behind the water.

Freedom Beach is located on the opposite side of Shark Bay and can be reached by going to the OK2 bungalows for about 3 minutes behind the junction. There will be a short piece of gravel road before reaching the parking lot of a resort. Go down further and you will see a sign for Freedom Beach.

The owners of the small restaurant do pretty good work to keep the beach clean. So if you would like to thank you, buy a drink or a snack. Just remember to take your garbage with you.

3. Koh Nang Yuan

Koh Nang Yuan is not really one of the beaches on Koh Tao, but a very small double -headed island about half a kilometer off the northwest coast of Koh Tao. This is one of the most famous and best -known photo points in the area, with a fantastic viewpoint with a view of a narrow white sandy beach that connects the two island heads.

You can get here by paying one of the many taxi boat drivers on the Sairee Beach. The general price for a long boat from Sairee costs you about 250 baht per boat for the return trip.

4. Tanote bay

Although Tanote Bay is on the other side of the island of the hustle and bustle of Sairee, it is one of the most popular beaches on Koh Tao. This is mainly due to fantastic snorkeling and Cliff Jumping.

To get from Sairee to Tanote Bay, drive towards the cha locomotive until you see a large sign on the left. They pass the small and only veterinary clinic of the island and continue to drive up the hill and over it. Drive straight on this street to the end, where you can see a small unpaved road that leads to the beach.

This main street is one of the most scenic in Koh Tao and offers an epic panoramic view. We stopped most of our time along the street to enjoy the epic views of the island coast.

In Tanote Bay there is a large rock that appears about 4 m out of the water. This rock has some of the best snorkeling options from the other beaches on Koh Tao. You can also climb to the top of the rock to jump into the deep water underneath.

5. Wong-Wong Bay

Hin Wong Bay is another epic bay with a small rocky beach on Koh Tao. This place is somewhat calmer than other beaches on Koh Tao, mainly because of the monster hill that you have to drive up to reach it.

To get to Wong Bay, drive from the main area of ​​Sairee Beach towards Smile Mart. Go on on this main street, past Smile Mart and up the hill. It is quite steep and you will most likely need at least one 110 cc scooter to get it up. As soon as you have reached the tip of the hill, you can enjoy the spectacular view of Sairee before driving the other side of the hill down towards Wong Bay.

Many people like to visit Wong Bay to snorkel or just to relax on the rocky beach. There are also many diving boats that create here when the weather is rough on the Sairee, west side of Koh Tao.

6. Bay of Cha Lok

Cha Lok Bay is a large beach that is stretched by a long white sand strip. A few boats are moored in this bay, but the water is clear and much better suited for swimming than the Pappel Saire beach.

This beach is pretty easy to find because many diving shops are scattered along the beach section. To get to the Cha Lok Bay, drive towards the city of Cha Lok and continue past the junction to Tanote Bay. As soon as you have reached the Koh Tao Resort, you can walk through the gaps in the many resorts and diving shops and the beach.

Although snorkeling is not as good as on some other beaches on Koh Tao, the Bay of Cha Lok is great to spend the day on the beach or in one of the beach bars.

7. Saire beach

Anyone who travels to Koh Tao will eventually land on the Sairee Beach. Whether for the famous pub tour on Koh Tao or the search for diving shops with which you can organize a PADI certificate, Sairee Beach is the main tourist area of ​​Koh Tao.

It is not difficult to overlook this beach, but I found that the best places on the northern tip of the beach were away from the longtails and diving boats that drive into the bay.

There are also some great bars along the beach section. Sairee is ideal for sunset because you can watch the sun disappear behind the horizon.

8th abandoned resort beach (Laem Thian Beach)

The Abandoned Resort is one of my favorite beaches on Koh Tao. A once busy resort is now empty and abandoned. Due to the wall that you need for about an hour on foot, you usually have the whole bay on your own.

After looking at the abandoned resort, you have the opportunity to snorkel in the Bay of Laem Thain or to jump off the cliffs on the other side of the bay, where some high rocks protrude from the deep water.
