How do I get here?

By far the best way to explore Chiang Rai and its scenic surroundings is to rent a motorbike and drive around on your own. The roads around Chiang Rai are very well maintained and much less chaotic than their northern neighbor; Chiangmai.

You can rent a motorbike in Chiang Rai for 150 baht per day. If you are staying at Grace Hostel, the owner can arrange this for you.

The Jungle Waterfall Hike

This waterfall hike is quite short. In fact, it only takes about 5 minutes to reach the first level and about 10 minutes total to reach the second level.

Although some sections are a bit steep, it is a very easy hike. Before approaching the final level, you'll cross a bamboo bridge that looks like it could use some much-needed and overdue repairs.

Although the trail is not very busy, some trekkers visit Huay Kaew Waterfall at the end of their Chiang Rai hikes.

The first level is a wide, cascading series of waterfalls approximately 30 meters high. Once you get close to it, you'll realize it's more for photography than swimming.

However, if you continue along the steep path that winds to the left and then cuts back to the right along the flowing river, you will soon reach the main waterfall level. At 40 meters, this is slightly higher and steeper.

It is important to remember that this waterfall depends on wet weather. This means that it could dry out completely in the dry season.

The best time to visit this waterfall is between October and April. During this time the weather is not overwhelmingly hot and there is enough rain to keep the falls running.
