The Khun Korn Waterfall Hike is a short hike through a jungle valley to one of Thailand's most impressive waterfalls. Khun Korn Waterfall is just a short drive from Thailand's northernmost city, Chiang Rai. In my opinion, visiting this waterfall is one of the best things to do in Chiang Rai. In fact, visiting this waterfall was one of the main reasons why I decided to stay longer in the city.

How to get to Khun Korn Waterfall?

Since the Khun Korn Waterfall hike is just outside of town, there aren't many standard tour groups that visit this waterfall. Apart from that, there are some groups that stop by here as an additional stop at the end of some Chiang Rai trekking tours.

With that in mind, the best way to get to the starting point of the Khun Korn Waterfall Trail is to rent a motorbike in Chiang Rai and drive yourself here.

Your destination is Khun Korn Forest Park, which is about 40 minutes from Chiang Rai city. Getting there is pretty easy if you follow the Google Maps pin below.

You must remember that the first part of the ride is on busy roads, so being safe on a motorcycle on Thai roads is a must. After about 30 minutes of driving, you turn onto a winding forest road that you have to follow to the end of the road.

Here you will see a large parking lot and a quaint little restaurant where you can recharge your batteries after the hike. The starting point for the hike to Khun Korn Waterfall is about 50 meters from this parking lot and is marked by a small signposted forest opening.

As of January 2020, entry to the Khun Korn Waterfall is free. This means that this waterfall hike is not only one of the best things to do in Chiang Rai, but it's also free!

The Khun Korn waterfall hike

Once you reach the trailhead, it's just a short 1.5 kilometer hike until you reach the waterfall. The trail is relatively flat and passes towering bamboo forests and scattered banana trees.

At the end of the process. You'll need to make a quick climb to the valley floor, where you can get in and under the waterfall and shallow swimming pool.

Thailand's most impressive waterfall?

There is no doubt that Khun Korn Waterfall is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Thailand. The huge, 70 meter deep waterfall tears through the upper jungle plateau and plunges into a shallow but swimmable freshwater pool.

At the base of the waterfall there is a flowing drain that winds around several large boulders. We sat here for about an hour, enjoying the scene and trying to get some shots.

Depending on the time of year, Khun Korn Waterfall could potentially become a dangerous place to visit, especially after excessive rainfall. You have to decide for yourself whether you can swim here or not.

WHERE TO STAY – ACCOMMODATION GUIDE

My accommodation in Chiang Mai: Grace HostelGrace Hostel was actually one of my favorite hostels in Northern Thailand. The free breakfast is great. Although it's just outside the city center, the friendly owner can drive you to the markets or the bus station for free.

Highly-Rated Guesthouse: SuanTung Guest House This is one of the top-rated budget guesthouses in Chiang Rai. It's super central, just a few minutes walk from the night market and the clock tower and the bus stop.

Cheapest Dorm in Chiang Rai: Bar 184 Party HostelBar 184 has dorms for under $5 per night, which is the cheapest you'll find in Chiang Rai. If you're looking for a party atmosphere at a reasonable price, this is the place for you. These guys also arrange motorbikes if you would like you to ride one to Khun Korn Waterfall.
