Dien Khanh Citadelle: On the way to the national cultural heritage!

The Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism has approved a proposal from the People's Committee of the Province of Khanh Hoa, which would like to classify the citadel of Dien Khanh as a special national relic. This decision was announced on May 21, 2025. The citadel, which was built in the late 18th century, represents not only an important military architecture, but also an important part of Vietnamese history.

The construction work for the citadel was commissioned in 1793 by Nguyen Anh, who later ruled as King Gia Long. Their construction in the military Vauban style was able to offer strategic advantages and made them an important administrative and military center in the South Central Vietnam region. Today the citadel is located in the area of ​​two municipalities, Phu My and Truong Thanh, in the district of Phuoc Dien The Prefecture Dien Khanh.

The citadel was guarded by Nguyen van Thanh and, after 1975, acted as the headquarters of the administrative authorities of the Dien Khanh district. The historical value of the citadel is unmistakable because it reflects the development of Vietnamese history and culture. On November 16, 1988, the citadel was recognized with the decision No. 1288 VH/QD as a national monument and beforehand it received a renovation in accordance with Resolution No. 06/NQ-HDND of April 7, 2022. The aim of these renovations is not only to preserve the citadel, but also to promote the local economy and tourism and to raise public awareness.

The Ministry also suggests the name "Dien Khanh Citadel" for the relic. The composition and format of the dossier should be checked in accordance with the circular No. 09/2011 2011/TT-BVHTTDL and No. 18/2022/TT-BVHttDL to enable a formal classification.
