Grave matters in Thanh Hoa: Chinese perpetrators on the run!

Lam Kinh, Thanh Hoa, Vietnam - On May 3, 2025, the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism of Thanh Hoa was informed about a serious incident: King Le Tuc Tong's grave in Lam Kinh was desired. Already at the first inspection by employees of the Center for Historical Research and Conservation, striking damage and a deep hole of 90 cm x 52 cm were found, which was dug by three Chinese nationals. Among the artifacts found are 14 stone steles with Chinese characters and dragon decorations of the Le dynasty and 15 dark gray bricks.

The Canh Hoa provincial police reacted promptly to this incident and arrested the suspects, while an investigation process was initiated in accordance with the legal provisions. The desecration of the grave not only raises questions about the security of the historical site, but also on the preservation of the national heritage. The authority emphasized that the current control of the other relics at the historical site Lam Kinh was confirmed as safe.

progress in the Enlightenment

On May 7, the Center for Historical Research and Conservation was officially announced that the police were examining a serious case of grave refraction. King Le Tuc Tong's grave belongs to the Lam Kinh Special National Monument Complex. During the search, a cell phone with a Chinese user interface, identification papers by a Chinese citizen and a tattoo tool that is often used to find antiques was ensured. The two suspects, Deng Zhui (41 years) and Shen Jiangyang (43 years), try to leave Vietnam over the northern border after the first investigations.

Both suspects had illegally held up on April 28, 2025 on the Mong Cai International Border Gate in Vietnam. When arriving on May 4, it was found that the suspects fled with a taxi in which they had dug a deep hole at the grave of King Le Tuc Tong. Despite their targeted efforts, however, they found no valuable antiques and left their tools on site.

protection of historical sites

The Thanh Hoa provincial authority for culture, sport and tourism expressed concern about similar incidents in other provinces and calls for strengthening the protection of historical sites. In Thanh Hoa, a total of 18 graves of kings, queens and mandarins are classified as national monuments. In addition, 37 graves of mandarins with rank and 24 graves without rank are managed and protected by local authorities.

In order to prevent further thefts, the Ministry plans measures to strengthen protection and prevent illegal trade in relics. The historical sites are now equipped with camera systems, barbed wire fences and border markings to ensure a high level of security.

The case remains with intensive observation, while the investigation into the motives and methods of trench desecration continues. King Le Tuc Tong, also known as Le Thuan, was the third son of King Le Hien Tong and ruled only six months before he died on January 12, 1505
