Discovery of Son Doong Cave
The history of the famous Son Doong Cave, considered the largest cave in the world, is equally fascinating. It was discovered in 1990 by Ho Khanh, who came across an opening in a limestone wall while foraging in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. At first he forgot about the cave until he was reminded of it in 2008 during an exploratory expedition with Howard and Deb Limbert of the British Cave Research Association. After several attempts, he finally found the cave again and led the team to open it in 2009.
The first survey in the same year showed that the cave has the largest cross-section of any known cave in the world. Such discoveries help attract adventurers and nature lovers and raise Quang Binh's profile as a leading tourist destination in Vietnam. The national park as well as its caves and the initiatives to promote sustainable tourism ensure that the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the region is preserved for future generations.
