Rail tourism in Vietnam: New splendor for Quang Nam and the surrounding area!

Vietnam is continuing to develop its tourism strategy, with rail tourism playing a central role. Several regions, including Quang Binh, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Binh Thuan, Ninh Thuan, Binh Dinh and Khanh Hoa, offer rich opportunities to diversify tourism products. This was done by vietnam.vn reported, but represents only part of the comprehensive strategy.

An important milestone was the arrival of the Thong Nhat train on April 30, 2023, which took tourists to Da Nang Railway Station to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South. This shows the growing role of railways in the development of national tourism.

Latest developments in rail tourism

In July 2024, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Vietnam Tourism Authority and the Vietnam Railway Company to strengthen cooperation. As a result, the Hue-Da Nang tourist train was put into operation in March 2024, which has the motto “Connecting Central Heritage” and travels over the picturesque Hai Van Pass. This initiative aims to ease road traffic while improving travel experiences.

Another highlight is the start of the luxury tourist train SJourney in January 2025 in Quang Nam at the Tra Kieu station. This train will allow tourists to visit the ancient city of Hoi An and its attractions. A joint plan to promote tourism in Quang Nam and to improve rail services was also developed for the years 2024-2026.

Challenges and solutions

As part of these developments, the National Tourism Authority sees great potential in rail tourism. However, there are also significant challenges: These include inadequate infrastructure, slow train speeds and insufficiently attractive on-board service. Therefore, there is an urgent need to improve wagon quality, food and entertainment options.

The connection between train stations and tourist attractions is currently inadequate, affecting the travel experience. Successful models from Europe as well as Thailand and Indonesia could serve as inspiration for Vietnam to overcome these challenges.

A modern train station system is being developed in Quang Nam, which will be connected to existing and planned railway lines. The government is also aiming to invest in light rail lines and sustainable tourism products. Such measures are crucial to further expand rail tourism as a safe and effective means of transport with great development potential in Vietnam.
