Bicycle history up close: The spectacular exhibition in Ledeč!

A fascinating exhibition highlighting the history of the bicycle is currently on display in the picturesque surroundings of Ledeč nad Sázavou Castle. The castle's castellan, Luděk Šíma, has put together a collection of historical bicycles that will be open to the public until the end of September. This exhibition offers a unique insight into the development of the bicycle from the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the First Czechoslovak Republic.

The highlights of the exhibition include three remarkable exhibits from the monarchy period. Among these are penny farthings and bicycles without pedals, which illustrate the technical capabilities of the time. A notable example from 1915 is characterized by its lighter construction, thinner spokes, pneumatic tires and a sprung saddle. Interestingly, a tandem from the same period is also part of the collection. Another highlight is a military bicycle that was designed for soldiers and offered plenty of storage space for equipment.

Diverse exhibits from different eras

The exhibition also includes a wide range of other bicycles, including an exercise bike, a folding bike and motorized two-wheelers. The more recent exhibits, most of which date from the 1980s, are also important. Particularly noteworthy are the bicycles from the traditional Czechoslovakian brand Eska and children's bicycles from the manufacturer Velamos. The models on display include the legendary Pionýr and the Sobi 20, which enjoys cult status in the Czech Republic and is even being produced again in Slovakia due to its popularity.

The bikes are part of an anonymous collector's private collection, which includes an impressive 2,500 bikes. The exhibition is open Tuesday to Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and offers an excellent opportunity to explore the impressive development of the bicycle.

New cycle paths for the region

In addition to the exhibition, the town of Ledeč nad Sázavou has been involved in the construction of new cycle paths. Cyklostezka v Podhájí was opened in December last year. This new cycle route stretches for almost two kilometers and was very popular when it opened, particularly among seniors, families with strollers and dogs.

The total cost of building the cycle route was 7 million crowns, with 4,428,000 crowns supported by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure. The region is known for its beautiful and romantic nature, which makes the cycling route an attractive destination for visitors. Future plans already include expansion of the cycle route, including a connection to the town of Světlá. These improvements are intended to appeal to athletes and tourists alike and make the region even more attractive.
