Adventure on four hooves: Esther and Charly conquer the Baltic Sea!
32-year-old Esther Strohmer from Bennewitz near Torgau has an extraordinary adventure ahead of her. On May 13, 2025, she and her faithful horse Charly will set off on a 370-kilometer journey to Greifswald. The route takes you over the Torgau Elbe Bridge and through the region's idyllic landscape, with the aim of reaching the Baltic Sea within two and a half weeks.
Charly, a 26-year-old gelding, has been with Esther since she was a child. Her special bond with the horse, which she adopted as a four-year-old, began when she was ten years old. Now that Charly is old, Esther wants to take advantage of the time together while he is still fit enough for such adventures. He carries his luggage himself, while Esther walks most of the way alongside him.
Preparations and training
To ensure that Charly copes well with the upcoming stress, Esther started targeted training early on. She only has the bare minimum of luggage with her, including food for Charly, an electric fence and a tarp for possible emergency overnight stays. She often sleeps in the open air, but has also stayed in a holiday apartment.
During her trip, she consciously plans to avoid large towns. Nevertheless, difficulties arose, particularly in Herzberg, where she encountered unexpected challenges. To ensure that they are well looked after during overnight stays, Esther has planned the route to Berlin and contacted horse farms for overnight accommodation. On her way she meets many people who show great interest in her project.
Personal backgrounds
Esther completed training as an occupational therapist and studied psychology. In a significant step, she recently sold her unpackaged store in Greifswald, which gives her the freedom for this journey. While she plans to take a break in Strausberg to visit friends and get fresh clothes, Charly's well-being is always her top priority. She announces that her journey will be based on his needs.
This adventure trip is not only a personal project, but also attracts attention from the wider public. How lvz.de reports, Esther's story shows the great interest in environmentally friendly travel and the developmentally appropriate treatment of animals.
