The Lombok Monkey Forest is a newly created tourist attraction on a winding mountain road near Senggigi. Here you will find many wild macaques roaming the road and hanging out in the trees at the nearby viewing point.

How to get to Lombok Monkey Forest

The Lombok Monkey Forest, known as Baun Pusuk, is located on a mountain pass between West and North Lombok regencies.

To get here it takes about 30-40 minutes from Senggigi by motorbike. You have the option of taking the southern route through rice terraces and small villages or the northern coastal route past Malimbu Hill and the epic Senggigi beaches.

Whichever route you take, you'll be taken inland and up into the mountainous foothills of Lombok. For detailed directions, type “Pusuk Forest Viewpoint” into Google Maps

Baun Pusuk

Baun Pusuk is the name for this forest area of ​​Lombok. Pusuk roughly means “peak,” as the name is thought to come from the viewpoint at the top of the mountain pass.

The altitude in Lombok Monkey Forest is much higher than in surrounding coastal towns, allowing denser, rainforest-like flora to thrive. This makes it a perfect habitat for the resident monkeys.

The monkeys in this area are now very used to human interaction. This is a double-edged sword as they can sometimes become a bit overconfident. Remember, if you drive or ride, drive slowly as the monkeys often sit in the middle of the road.

Mountain viewpoint

Since I spent quite a bit of time exploring Lombok Island, I had already seen a lot of monkeys. In fact, they can be found pretty much anywhere inland and occasionally even on the coast.

However, the highlight of the Lombok Monkey Forest for me was the viewpoint. You can find it on the map above, where you can park your motorbike and look down into the valley to the sea.

MY ACCOMMODATION IN SENGGIGI: OYO 645 Green AsriIn Senggigi, I stayed in this small hotel with a pool, huge bathroom and TV for just $9 per night. I'm not sure if it was a low season special, but it's definitely the best value in Senggigi for this price. It's a little off the main beat, but definitely worth it. If you book here, don't miss Henry, the street vendor around the corner. He makes some of the best spiced coffees I've ever tasted and offers hotel-class meals for IDR 12,000.

CLIFF BEACH SUNSET VIEWS FOR UNDER $40: Pasific Beach Cottages If I had a higher budget in Senggigi, this is the place I would have booked. It is located on the coast near Senggigi Beach, where you can enjoy the views from your balcony or the pool. In terms of value, this is as good as you might find in all of Lombok.
