AIDA shareholders in turmoil: Vario tariff will lose onboard credit from June!

From June 1, 2025, there will no longer be any onboard credit for AIDA Cruises shareholders who book the Vario tariff. This particularly affects shareholders who own over 100 shares in the company. Previously, they received onboard credit depending on the length of the trip, with amounts of up to $250 (~€225) per cabin. However, the Vario tariff, which is considered the cheapest tariff at AIDA, does not allow cabin selection and is not offered for all cruises, which makes the decision even more difficult for many potential customers. Loud Travel Dealz The existing shareholder benefits were extended until the end of 2025, but the removal of the on-board credit for the Vario tariff is perceived as surprising.

Carnival Corporation, the parent company of AIDA and the largest cruise company in the world, has officially communicated the changes on its website. However, the basic rule remains that shareholders must continue to hold at least 100 shares (WKN 120100 or WKN 12007) in order to benefit from the advantages. However, these shareholder services now only include bookings in the Premium and Premium All-Inclusive tariffs, while customers in the Vario tariff come away empty-handed.

Onboard credit and tariff structure

This also includes a staggering of the on-board credit depending on the length of the trip:

Trip length Onboard credit
6 days or less 40€
7 to 13 days 75€
14 days or more 200€

Carnival's decision to eliminate the onboard credit for the Vario fare comes against the backdrop of the shipping companies' share prices falling since the pandemic. So far, shareholder benefits have been maintained despite these declines, which has certainly pleased many shareholders. How Cruise news reported, the amounts of the on-board credit remain unchanged and the possibility of annual extension still exists.

With the new regulations, AIDA Cruises will now specifically steer its customers towards the higher-priced tariffs, while the Vario tariff will become less attractive for many shareholders. This could potentially also have an impact on the company's future booking policy, as the Vario tariff comes with many restrictions.
