Andrea Kiewel's 60th birthday: celebration in Spain instead of TV garden!
Andrea Kiewel, the popular presenter of “ZDF- Fernsehengarten”, celebrated her 60th birthday in Spain on June 10, 2025. Instead of being celebratory in Germany or Israel, she enjoyed the sun and holiday atmosphere while in Barcelona she visited the Sagrada Família and jumped into the hotel pool. She chronicled her journey in a column for SuperIllu magazine, where she also shared thoughtful words about aging. Kiewel emphasized that she is grateful for her body and reflected on society's obsession with youth.
Although Kiewel was far away that day, the “ZDF TV Garden” wanted to celebrate its 25th anniversary on June 15, 2025. But due to the closed airspace over Israel, she was unable to travel to Mainz, where the broadcast took place. Instead, Joachim Llambi and Lutz van der Horst stepped in and took over the moderation. Llambi explained that Kiewel was fine but was sad not to be there. The audience in Mainz, consisting of around 5,000 to 6,000 viewers per broadcast, gave an encouraging round of applause for the celebrant.
An anniversary in the air
The current season of “ZDF- Fernsehengarten”, which began on May 4, 2025 and is scheduled to include 20 programs until the end of September, was a special season for Kiewel. She has hosted the show since 2000, which has been broadcast since 1986. In the past, Kiewel Ilona Christen and Ramona Leiß have appeared in front of the camera. Behind the scenes, a team of 130 members ensures that everything runs smoothly. The technical equipment used includes 10-12 studio cameras and 70 daylight spotlights.
However, the impact of the Middle East conflict created an unexpected obstacle. Kiewel, who has lived in Tel Aviv since 2017, was confronted with negative reactions from viewers as she was criticized for her absence in Mainz. This led to the intervention of production, which took care of the situation.
The “ZDF TV Garden” is broadcast weekly with audio description and subtitles and attracts around 100,000 live viewers every season. Nevertheless, Kiewel's absence remains a critical issue in recent weeks as she continues to deal with the closed airspace situation.
