We reveal the details of our new role as Lonely Planet Trailblazers, a partnership with the world's largest travel guide publisher

Those of you who have followed us since our early South Pacific journey will know that we have worked with Lonely Planet on a regular basis, from taking over their Instagram account to co-hosting Twitter chats to running campaigns for third parties.

We've had a lot of fun working with Lonely Planet's online and social media teams and are excited to announce that we'll be working more closely together in the future as part of the new Trailblazers program.

So – what exactly is the Trailblazers program and what will change at Atlas & Boots? Below we answer 10 reader questions.

1. What is Lonely Planet's Trailblazers program?

The Trailblazer program brings in successful bloggers, vloggers, photographers and digital influencers to expand the content offering to Lonely Planet's audience.

Trailblazers is part of a broader initiative called Pathfinders, a community of contributors maintained by Lonely Planet. Trailblazers is the top level of the Pathfinders program – something like the crème de la crème 🙂

2. How many Trailblazers are there?

At launch there are seven blogs selected as Lonely Planet Trailblazers from a Pathfinders community of 3,000.

The seven are:

  • Atlas & Boots (uns!)
  • Eine abenteuerliche Welt
  • Dan Flying Solo
  • Hopse der Globus
  • Im Reiselabor
  • Unverdrehter Markt
  • Fernweh Chloe

3. How were the Trailblazers selected?

The Trailblazers were selected at Lonely Planet's discretion. Their Pathfinders homepage describes Trailblazers as people who know how to foster community and who have built a loyal audience that trusts their opinions and regularly engages with their content. We believe we meet these criteria and are pleased that Lonely Planet does too!

4. What's in it for Atlas & Boots?

Lonely Planet Trailblazers receive a number of benefits including:

  • Eine langfristige Partnerschaft mit einer der größten Reisemarken der Welt
  • Bezahlte Einsätze und Reisemöglichkeiten
  • Kontakt mit dem globalen Publikum von Lonely Planet (online und über soziale Medien)
  • Hot Desking in den Büros von Lonely Planet auf der ganzen Welt

5. What's in it for Lonely Planet?

It may not be immediately obvious why Lonely Planet would want to pay us to cover exciting activities in far-flung places! It is important to understand that although they have an extensive network of experts, they need increasingly talented contributors.

The Trailblazers program allows them to report on the obscure places we visit and the amazing things we do.

Lonely Planet lists the following main advantages:

  • Langfristige Partnerschaften mit den erfolgreichsten Erstellern von Reiseinhalten weltweit
  • Vielfältigere, nützliche Inhalte für unser Publikum
  • Eine starke Online-Community

6. Do you get paid to say positive things about Lonely Planet?

We're brand ambassadors, but we're not paid to tell people how great Lonely Planet is. Rather, we get paid to contribute content that makes Lonely Planet truly great.

We said a long time ago (before Lonely Planet even knew who we were!) that we were fans of the brand. Now part of our role will be to help him stay great.

7. Is Lonely Planet moving away from sourcing content from local authors?

No. Despite the fact that we are local writers, we will not be writing content for travel guides; This is still done by people who have in-depth knowledge of a country that cannot be acquired in a month of travel there. Rather, we will expand Lonely Planet's existing travel content by offering unique perspectives in new formats.

8. What will change at Atlas & Boots?

Nothing changes at Atlas & Boots. We will still write about our personal experiences and observations. We will add links to Lonely Planet guides at the end of our articles, but we have been doing this for a long time and certainly before we became Lonely Planet Trailblazers!

9. Can I become a Trailblazer myself?

There is definitely an opportunity for this. You can get started by joining the Pathfinders program. After that, you need to be an active part of the community and consistently produce high-quality content. Once you reach a critical mass of fans or followers, you may be invited to become a Trailblazer!

10. Anything else I need to know?

Just that we are super happy to be part of the program. Atlas & Boots has been our full-time job for the last three years and it is encouraging to receive recognition from the world's most recognized and loved travel brand.

See you out there!
