Arve Falls is a very accessible waterfall that flows on the Arve River in the Hartz Mountains National Park in Tasmania. Although it's not the most impressive waterfall, I would still recommend a visit if you're heading to the Hartzberge!

In this quick guide, I want to equip you with all the knowledge you need to organize a trip to Arve Falls. I have also included a few photos that I took during my visit.

Where is Arve Falls?

Arve Falls is a small cascade fed by the Arve River. There is a parking lot at the trailhead that allows for a short walk to the falls on Hartz Road, about 85 kilometers south of Hobart.

How do I get here?

Unfortunately there are no organized tours or public transport that lead to the Hartz Mountains or the Arve Falls. Therefore, the only way to reach this Tasmanian alpine waterfall is to drive here yourself.

No matter which direction you come from, you must first head towards Geeveston. Once there, follow the signs for Hartz Mountains and Tahune Adventures up Arve Road (paved).

About 12 kilometers up the winding Arvestrasse you will see a turnoff into Hartzstrasse (unpaved). Follow this road for about 8 miles and you will find a large blue sign for Arve Falls on the left.

The road up to the Hartz Mountains is unpaved but well graded. However, it is steep and can freeze over in winter. We made it there with our big van without any problems, but there was no ice on the road that day.

If you want to explore the mountains south of Hobart but don't have your own transport, I can recommend this full-day tour from Hobart, which includes some of the best activities in the south. These include the Tahune AirWalk and the Hastings Caves.

The Arve Falls Walk

Hiking distance: 0.8 kilometers there and back
Duration: 10 minutes
Height: N/A
Difficulty level: Very easy

The Arve Falls Walk to the waterfall is one of the shortest and easiest waterfall walks I have done in Tasmania. The short route is very well maintained and has short sections with a wooden footbridge.

There is a section just before the falls where you cross a bridge over the Arve River which is very picturesque.

After about 450 meters along the Arve Falls trail from the parking lot, you will reach Arve Falls. There is a special wooden viewing platform at the bottom, but the view is somewhat obscured by the trees.

Alternatively, there is a very short, well-worn path just before the platform, from which I had a clear view of Arve Falls.

Arve Falls Tasmania

The main fall is around 5 meters, so by no means the largest waterfall in Tasmania. However, it is still a picturesque little waterfall that is worth a visit due to the very easy access and quick return.

As an alpine area, this area of the Hartz Mountains is often snow-covered in the winter months. Unfortunately the snow had already melted when I arrived, but it was still a worthwhile stop on the way back from Hartz Peak. However, you can often find photos online of Arve Falls surrounded by snow, something unique that is not very common for Australian waterfalls.
