Holiday fever 2025: Spain remains a top travel destination despite high prices!
The latest research into German travel shows that a large proportion of the population, specifically two thirds, have already made holiday plans for 2025. This is the result of the 41st German Tourism Analysis, in which the BAT Foundation for Future Questions discovered remarkable trends in a survey of 3,000 participants. Overall, 63% of Germans took at least one trip of five days or longer in 2024, close to the peak of 65% in 2006, reports FR.
What is particularly striking is that despite some crises, travel frequency is increasing. Cheaper travel at home is important: up to 29% are planning their vacation in Germany. This shows that many Germans also travel within their own country. Bavaria remains the most popular federal state for intra-European travel.
Most popular foreign destinations
Spain remains the most popular foreign travel destination, with 8% of respondents planning to vacation there. The average cost of a trip to Spain is an impressive 1,843 euros per person, which is due in no small part to high demand, rising hotel prices and expensive package holidays. In comparison, the average cost for Scandinavia is 1,728 euros per person, or 115 euros less. This range illustrates the sometimes considerable price differences between the popular travel regions.
The following table shows the price overview of the most expensive travel destinations:
| Destinations | Average cost per person |
|---|---|
| Spain | 1,843 euros |
| Scandinavia | 1,728 euros |
| Benelux countries | 1,006 euros |
| Austria | 1,176 euros |
| Croatia | 1,314 euros |
The popularity of Spain can be attributed to a combination of beach holidays, cultural offerings and lively nightlife. The good tourist infrastructure, which includes direct flight connections and a wide range of hotels, contributes to this. In second place among the most popular travel destinations is Italy with 6%, followed by Turkey (4.5%) and Scandinavia (4.3%). There is growing interest in long-distance travel outside the EU, particularly to Asia-Far East (4%), North America (2.5%) and North Africa (2.2%).
Travel expenses and planning
The analysis also illustrates the financial development on vacation: the average spending on the main vacation amounted to 1,544 euros per person in 2024, a record high and almost 50% above the long-term average. Nevertheless, the average daily costs have fallen to 122 euros, but are still above the level of ten years ago. Tips for saving money on holiday trips to Spain recommend taking advantage of the low season or considering cheaper alternatives such as Croatia or the Benelux countries.
Overall, the average travel duration remains stable at just under 13 days, which allows travelers a longer period of recovery. More than a third of vacationers plan and book their vacation well in advance, showing that people are increasingly placing more value on a well-organized trip. Given these trends, 2025 could be a particularly positive year for the travel industry, even if the general challenges remain, informs Foundation for Future Issues.
