Traffic jam madness on the Pentecost weekend: Drivers have to be patient!

Next weekend, which marks the beginning of the long Pentecost weekend, traffic experts are expecting significant traffic jams on the motorways in Germany. According to that ADAC Drivers from almost all federal states are on the road, with travelers from Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia particularly busy on the roads. The latter have no school on Tuesday, June 10th, which further increases travel traffic.

Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria are starting a two-week holiday period at the same time, which also contributes to increased traffic. The risk of traffic jams is particularly pronounced in the south of Germany, where many travelers head to popular destinations such as the Alps, the low mountain ranges as well as the North and Baltic Seas and neighboring countries.

Peak times and busy routes

The forecast reveals that traffic congestion is particularly high at the following times:

  • Freitagnachmittag, 6. Juni
  • Samstagvormittag, 7. Juni
  • Pfingstsonntag, 8. Juni (gilt als bester Reisetag)
  • Pfingstmontag, 9. Juni (vor allem am Nachmittag)
  • Dienstag, 10. Juni

The following highways are particularly affected by traffic jams for travelers:

Affected routes
A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A10, A11, A12, A19, A24, A61, A81, A93, A95/B2, A96, A99

It is emphasized that only a full closure on the A42 between Kamp-Lintfort and Dortmund has been announced, which will last from Friday, June 6th at 10 p.m. to Monday, June 16th at 5 a.m. There is also a long-term closure of the A45 between Hagen and Gießen, which will remain in effect until further notice.

International traffic jams and border controls

Traffic jams are also expected on international routes, particularly on the Brenner Motorway, Inntal Motorway and Tauern Motorway in Austria. Since the beginning of May, Germany has been carrying out random border controls, which can lead to waiting times at certain crossings.

Another important note concerns the formation of emergency lanes: These must be created when traffic is at a standstill, otherwise there is a risk of fines of up to 320 euros for non-compliance.

The News.de highlights that the traffic jam forecasts for the coming weekend are similarly serious. The peak traffic times are comparable to those of the previous year, so the Friday before Pentecost is expected to be one of the busiest days. There is a high risk of traffic jams, particularly on trunk roads towards the North and Baltic Seas and on the A1 to A95 motorways. There are also likely to be traffic jams on important routes in Austria and Switzerland.
