Chaos at German airports: Frankfurt-Hahn at the bottom of the list in 2025!

This year's airport ranking by the air passenger rights portal Airhelp shows clear weaknesses at German airports. According to the evaluations, which are based on over 316,000 Google reviews, punctuality, service and the gastronomic offer are the three main criteria for the evaluation. Punctuality accounts for 60% of the overall rating. Some German airports perform particularly poorly.

Frankfurt-Hahn Airport leads the ranking of the worst German airports with only 2.8 out of 5 possible stars. Among other things, the geographical location of the airport, which is over 120 km from Frankfurt, is criticized. Berlin Brandenburg (BER) also remains below average, although it has improved by 0.1 stars and now reaches 3.2 stars.

The five worst German airports

  • Frankfurt-Hahn: 2,8 Sterne
  • Berlin Brandenburg (BER): 3,2 Sterne
  • Dortmund, Köln-Bonn, Memmingen: je 3,5 Sterne
  • Weeze, Hannover, Düsseldorf: je 3,6 Sterne
  • Hamburg, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden: je 3,7 Sterne

Among the larger airports, the majority perform only mediocre. In contrast, smaller airports, such as Lübeck-Blankensee Airport, which leads the ranking with 4.4 stars, achieve significantly better ratings. Airports such as Münster-Osnabrück, Kassel-Calden and Rostock-Laage also achieve a solid 4.3 stars, while Nuremberg, Paderborn-Lippstadt, Saarbrücken and Friedrichshafen each achieve 4.2 stars.

The international ranking

At a global level, Airhelp's ranking shows that no German airport is included in the top 10 best airports in the world for 2024. The top places are occupied by Hamad International Airport in Doha with 8.52 points, as well as Cape Town Airport in South Africa with 8.50 points and Chubu Airport in Japan with 8.49 points. Dortmund Airport is in 32nd place.

In an international comparison, Frankfurt Airport holds the title of the worst German airport with 6.99 points, making it the 18th worst airport in the world. Negative values can also be seen at other international airports, such as Tunis Airport, which is the worst airport in the world with only 5.35 points.

Despite the extensive infrastructure investments in recent years, customer satisfaction remained almost unchanged compared to the previous year. Delays, strikes and long waiting times contribute to the below-average ratings. However, airport travel is often necessary for many people to reach distant holiday destinations.

For many travelers, amenities at airports are just as important as the punctuality of flights. The differences between various airports are clearly reflected in the evaluation structure, as the rankings of Mercury and Travel reporter clarify. Passengers expect not only punctuality from airports, but also culinary variety and friendly service.
