Discovery tour by train: From Berlin to the Sound – an unforgettable adventure!

A new documentary highlights the special train journey from Berlin along impressive landscapes in Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. NDR reports on the passengers' experiences and interesting stops along the way in the program "Travel where others go on holiday", which will be broadcast on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The train journey stretches over 240 kilometers and includes 22 stops, the names of which are unknown to many people, but which have a fascination of their own. One of the stops is the charming ice cream parlor in Stargard Castle, where time literally seems to stand still. Cycling enthusiasts can also admire impressive stunts in the Dirt Force Bike Park, while passengers enjoy the scenic ride, which takes three hours to the destination station, Stralsund.

Insights into the region

Passengers are given a clear picture of the region. Anne Buth, who runs a canoe station next to Klempenow Castle, shows how diverse the nature is along the route. Ralph Krehl, the last fisherman from Strelasund, also talks about his deep connection to his job and the water. At the destination station, the historic Stralsund, travelers can explore the Hanseatic city, where restoration treasures such as baroque doors are on display. The restorer Wolf-Dieter Thormeier provides insights into the history of this special city.

The author Kathrin Matern and the editorial team of Birgit Müller, under the direction of Frederik Keunecke, ensured that the film not only conveys the beauty of the landscape, but also the special encounters that you can have on the train and along the route.

Travel options with the City Land Sea Ticket

For trips to the region, there is the Stadt Land Meer Ticket, which offers travelers the opportunity not only to visit the Hanseatic cities such as Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund, but also to travel to Berlin. With the Plus ticket option, other coastal routes as well as the popular islands of Usedom and Rügen can be easily reached.

The ticket is valid for regional express and regional train connections between Wismar and Stralsund, as well as to Rostock or Berlin. A special regulation allows the journey to be interrupted on the outward and return journey, for example in cities such as Greifswald or Oranienburg. Children up to 5 years old travel free of charge, while up to three children aged 6 to 14 years can also travel without a ticket.

The documentation and the associated ticket concept would like to encourage you to discover and experience the unique beauties and secrets of the region, which makes the combination of train travel and relaxation in Germany so special.
