Bukit Selong or Selong Hill is a small rice field viewpoint overlooking a carpet of fields and paddy fields in Sembalun, East Lombok.

This viewpoint is one of the best things to do in Sembalun if you're looking for a great sunset or sunrise viewpoint without the need for a big hike.

How to find Bukit Selong

Bukit Selong is just behind Sembalun Village. If you stay overnight in Sembalun, you can either walk or ride a motorbike to the viewpoint. If you follow these instructions on how to find Bukit Selong, it shouldn't take you longer than 30 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by car.

The easiest way to find Bukit Selong Viewpoint is to use Google Maps, which will guide you to the viewpoint. However, here are some general instructions in case you get lost:

From the Rinjani National Park office, follow the main road south and turn left just after “Putra Sembalun Homestay”. Continue walking until you cross a small bridge over a river and pass through the bamboo forest to a small village. From here you can already see some of the rice fields, the Bukit Selong viewpoint is the small hill right in front of the village.

BUKIT SELONG PRICE: 5000 per person

Unfortunately, as of September 2019, the village here is still struggling to rebuild after the earthquake. A small donation of 5000 IDR per person to enjoy their local perspective will help them get back on their feet.

Bukit Selong Rice Field Viewpoint

As you follow the path up the hill you will see the remains of an old wooden star and treehouse bridge. Still, the view of the rice fields is magical at both sunrise and sunset.

From the top of Selong Hill, you can also see the entire town of Sembalun and watch the sunset behind Rinjani. When we visited, there was a lingering fog that combined with the echoing nighttime prayers to create a spectacular scene.

The rice fields form a pastiche carpet that lies beneath the surrounding hills, including the popular hiking viewpoint; Pergasingan Hill.

Sembalun Village is not exactly the most touristy place in Lombok. However, that doesn't mean there aren't great guesthouses or hotels.

ACCOMMODATION IN MY SEMBALUN: Radiyah Guesthouse This is one of the most affordable accommodation options in Sembalun. I would definitely recommend her. The rooms are small but very clean and have everything you need. There is unlimited free coffee and tea, as well as free breakfast. The owner is extremely helpful and will arrange a motorbike for you for 50,000 IDR per day.

BEST INN-STYLE ACCOMMODATION: Sembalun Kita Cottage This is probably the place I would have booked if I hadn't stayed at Radiyah. They have great reviews, reasonably priced rooms, and large beds. It includes free breakfast, which is rated “very good” on Booking.com.
