Zelem Castle: Gentle tourism secures the future on the Lower Rhine!

Zelem, Kranenburg, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Deutschland - Jochen Arden, the owner of Zelem Castle in Kranenburg, has ambitious plans to expand the use of his historical knight's seat. The aim is to secure the future of the castle and to generate additional income through “gentle tourism”. Zelem Castle has been owned by the Arden family since 1922 and was first mentioned in the 12th century. This old knight seat is not only a testimony to history, but is also to be expanded into a cultural center in the region.

Arden, who previously made a career in the automotive trade, especially with a Jaguar, has carried out extensive renovation work at the castle since 2000 - and without funding. The outer castle, which once served as a barn, is currently being rebuilt to enable seminars, readings and concerts. In order to further increase the historical importance and the attractiveness of the castle, Arden also plans to open his collection of historical vehicles more to the public.

tourist support and regional concerns

The planned changes to promote gentle tourism find both supporters and critics. Niederrhein Tourismus GmbH is supportive because there is a need for accommodation in the region. The NRW Ministry of Economics has also signaled its approval of the tourist plans. Mayor Ferdinand Böhmer, however, points out that no building application has yet been made for the planned Tiny Houses.

Nevertheless, there are concerns about the planned changes in the peasantry. According to Arden, however, no restrictions for neighboring farmers should be created. This is an important point to maintain the dialogue with the local community and to dispel possible fears.

a historical heir

The Zelem Castle is located in the duffle landscape and is described as a former knight seat. Historical records show that the castle was mentioned in the early 12th century among the goods of the Echternach Abbey. In the 14th century, the castle changed the owner several times, including important families and nobles in the region. The characteristic features of the castle, including two corner towers and a portal with the Palant family's coat of arms, have been preserved to this day.

The Zelem Foundation was also launched by Jochen Arden to preserve the knight's seat in the long term and to support cultural projects. The events include the annual Arden British Day, who attracts classic car enthusiasts. In addition, a 3D simulation of the castle was created, which illustrates the historical importance. Jochen Arden sees the renovation and preservation of Zelem Castle as his life's work and continues to work for its development to preserve the historical site for future generations.
