Castle serenades in Bochum: Experience baroque music from Caterva Musica” for free!

On Sunday, June 1, 2025, an outstanding concert will take place at 5 p.m. in the Stiepeler Dorfkirche, Brockhauser Straße 74a, as part of the “Burgserenaden” concert series. The ensemble “Caterva Musica” will perform works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann. The motto of the concert “Father – Son – Godfather!” promises an exciting and sonorous experience.

Admission to this special event is free, but donations to support the concert series are welcome. The castle serenades are organized by the “Förderverein Haus Kemnade and Grumbt Musical Instrument Collection e.V.” organized in cooperation with the cultural office of the city of Bochum, and since 2024 they have been an integral part of the regional cultural calendar. Traditionally, one of the four annual serenades takes place in the Stiepel village church, making this place a cultural center.

An emotional listening experience

The ensemble “Caterva Musica”, which was founded in 1998 by Elke and Wolfgang Fabri, has developed into one of the leading baroque ensembles in Westphalia. The musicians act under the direction of solo cellist Olaf Reimers and follow a historical performance practice that ensures an authentic listening experience. The members play on original or historically reconstructed instruments, which creates a special sound that does justice to the Baroque era.

“Caterva Musica” has made a name for itself through regular concerts, including over 50 different concert programs. Particularly noteworthy are the five annual performances at Horst Castle in Gelsenkirchen. One focus of the ensemble is working with churches and choirs; They perform both chamber music and larger orchestral works, including passions and oratorios.

A versatile program

The programming of “Caterva Musica” is extremely varied. A wide spectrum is covered, from secular cantatas to smaller operas such as the intermezzo opera “Pimpinone” by Georg Philipp Telemann. The concerts are characterized by the high playing quality of the musicians, who offer emotional and highly virtuoso performances.

A tour of the cultural history museum Haus Kemnade, An der Kemnade 10 in Hattingen, will take place at 3 p.m. on the same day. This offers visitors the opportunity to get in the mood for the evening and learn more about the region's cultural treasures.
