Cartagena in Colombia: 26 bids and prohibitions
Cartagena in Colombia: The name already has an aura of romanticism in the old world; of sultry -hot days, curvy city roads and crumpled treasure maps.
his enchanting architecture and interesting story certainly didn't disappoint us, but it was a baptism of fire after six months in the Pacific.
We quickly learned that there are two rules for the streets of Colombia. Do not offer a papaya at first. Second, when Papaya is offered, someone has to accept it. Of course, they don't mean papaya in the literal sense; It is an epitome for your valuables.

It reminds tourists (and locals) not to have a camera over your shoulder, not throw a strap bag on a chair, a wallet that looks out of a bag at the top. These are the most important lessons, but we learned a few others during our time in Cartagena.
Here is a summary for future visitors.
Cartagena, Colombia: 26 bids and prohibitions
- Spend the night in the heart of the old town. It can be cheaper to spend the night in the area, but you don't want to take the walk after dark.
- do not fly to Bogota; Drive directly to Cartagena. With a little luck, you can handle the capital completely.
- get lost when hiking through the labyrinth of paved streets, old walls and fortresses to see the old town from every perspective.
- don't expect too much from the old. There are great views of the city, but only a few available information about your history.
-
Watch the sunset at a Mojito in Café del Mar. It is touristy, but also very pretty.
-
don't go to the Convento de la Popa. The serpentine road up is unsafe, so take a taxi.
-
Visit Getsenami - it is darker than the old town, but still has its charm.
-
do not go out of the old town after dark - always take a taxi. We became complacent and got into trouble.
-
haven with the taxi drivers. Assume that the first prize you give you is twice as high as the actual price.
- do not waste a day on the depressing and rather ranks of Bocagrand tourist beach; Instead, take a day trip to the Islas del Rosario and Playa Blanca.
-
Take a look at some street performances on one of the numerous places.
-
Do not spend your entire food budget in the overpriced pizzerias. There is a lot of delicious street food for a fraction of the price.
-
Sit on a bench or appear with a cold drink and watch the people.
- don't feed the pigeons unless you are happy to have you with you!
-
Take a look at Romancing the Stone before visiting - if only because of Michael Douglas' ridiculous, purely white ensemble.
-
do not expect to see crocodiles in the city.
-
take the time to visit the botanical garden Jardin Botanico de Guillermo Piñeres, a perfect place for a break.
-
don't embarrass yourself on the dance floor before taking a few salsa lessons at crazyalsaSa.net.
- Visit the CatedRal, which was partially destroyed by Sir Francis Drake in 1575. These annoying British, ey?
-
don't take the kitschy chiva bus-you are better than that!
- Visit some of the museums: In the Palacio de la Inquisición (Inquisition Palace) tortured, directed and condemned the Spanish Inquisition men who were accused of crimes against religion. For the fewer sadists there is the free and air -conditioned Museo de Oro (Goldmuseum).
-
Look up as you walk around. The architecture is simply breathtaking.
- don't forget to exchange your dollars in pesos before getting into a taxi. You increase the price by four times if you want to pay in dollars.
-
keep an eye out for the classic admission of shirtless men who play in Getsemani Domino.
-
Try to count the Fernando Botero statues of fat naked people.
-
await you that your bus trip from Cartagena will become "eventful". We didn't have it easy in Colombia!
