The best water purifier for on the go: a review
If you travel frequently, purchasing bottled water can become an expensive endeavor. We take a look at SteriPEN, the best travel water purifier we've ever used We've stayed in some pretty basic places over the course of our trip so far. There was the Fiji campsite in Taveuni with rather poor commodes, the Samoan beach camp in Savaii, which had no walls, and the Colombian campsite in San Agustin with brownish-yellow drinking water. We've stayed in some pretty basic places over the course of our trip so far. There was the Fiji campsite in Taveuni with rather poor commodes, the Samoan beach camp in Savaii, which had no walls, and the Colombian campsite in San Agustin with brownish-yellow drinking water.
In all of these places we were able to drink the tap water (water from the hose in one case) because we could purify the water along the way.
On our past trips to India, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Cambodia, and the like, we've tried purifying filters, tablets, iodine, chlorine, and good old-fashioned cooking, but these were either ineffective, impractical, or simply tasted terrible.
That's why we researched the best water purifier for travel and found that the SteriPEN Ultra is the best water purifier for travel. Here are seven reasons why it's the best on the market. (And no, they don't pay us for it!)

It kills almost anything harmful
Unlike water filters, the SteriPEN kills over 99.9% of bacteria, viruses and protozoa that cause waterborne diseases. It uses UV light to zap the nasty stuff, leaving your water clean and safe (even if it's colored brownish-yellow).
It's super fast
Unlike boiling water (and water filters), the SteriPEN is fast. It only takes 90 seconds to sterilize a liter of water and 50 seconds for half a liter.
It's portable
At just 140g, the SteriPEN weighs less than a bottle of water. It fits in the side of a backpack, in a toiletry bag or even in a handbag.
IT CAN BE CHARGED VIA USB
The bane of any backpacker who travels with gadgets is the numerous different chargers. The SteriPEN can be charged via USB, meaning you only need to carry a cable to charge it from the mains, a solar charger or a laptop. A full charge is enough for 50 uses. (Considering the purpose it serves, it's basically science fiction.)
It doesn't affect the taste
Unlike chlorine and iodine, the SteriPEN has no effect on taste, meaning delicious water stays delicious and terrible water unfortunately tastes terrible. Maybe it would be perfect if they introduced a strawberry infusion.
It's worth the money
So what's the catch? Well, at £95 it's not easy on the pocket. However, if you are a frequent or long-term traveler, it will cost you less in the long run than constantly buying bottled water. For us the comparison is between £95 and around £365 worth of bottled water over the course of a year. The SteriPEN lasts 8,000 uses–much cheaper than 8,000 bottles of water!

Well, this is what it looks like in the dark...
