The 4 best beaches in Sekotong – Southwest Lombok

Sekotong is a province in the southwest of Lombok with the highest tourism potential I have ever seen, especially in relation to the beaches and islands of Sekotong! Although Sekotong is largely unexplored by tourists visiting Lombok, it has some of the island's most pristine and diverse beaches, including Elak Elak Beach, Mekaki Beach, Sekotong Beach and the incredible Gili Nanggu.

If you prefer empty, white sandy beaches and local warungs to overpriced cocktails and tourist touts, then definitely head to Sekotong.

The best Sekotong beaches

We spent just over a week in Sekotong, where we explored the coast by motorbike and took a two-day island hopping and camping trip to the islands of Gili Nanggu and Gili Kedis with Feel Lombok.

Since Sekotong doesn't have the tourist infrastructure of its surrounding coastal neighbors, getting a motorbike is a little more difficult. For this reason, I would suggest staying at Krisna Bungalows as you can rent a motorbike next door for 60,000 rupiah.

While it's certainly possible to rent a bike in Sekotong and explore the beaches yourself, you can also book a cheap, private tour to all of these beaches online. This includes pickup and drop-off from other popular areas of Lombok.

1. Elak Elak Beach

Elak Elak Beach, also referred to as Pantai Elak Elak in Bahasa, is an incredible white sand beach on the north coast of Sekotong. It is located on a sharp coastal point with an adjacent sandbar and a piled island.

To get here, it's just a short 15-minute scooter ride from Sekotong Port. To get here you just need to drive west on the paved coastal road until you see the turn sign for Elak Elak Beach. The Google Maps pin is called “Pantai Elak Elak”.

Once you arrive, you will undoubtedly have the entire beach to yourself. The water is shallow with a sandy bottom that is perfect for swimming and chilling.

At low tide you can even walk through knee-high water to the small island of Gili Milu. From here you are greeted with views of Elak Elak Beach, the Sekotong coastline and some smaller sandbar islands in the distance.

2. Sekotong Beach

Of course, a list of the best beaches in Sekotong wouldn't be complete without the beach of the same name. Sekotong Beach is a wide, sandy beach on a quiet coastline dotted with local boats and the occasional beachfront restaurant.

If you are looking for a quick place to swim or relax, then Sekotong Beach is a good choice as you don't have to travel far to reach it. However, keep in mind that long stretches of this beach are made up of hard rocks and coral. However, if you walk around you will find several sections of soft sand for swimming.

3. Gili Nanggu

For most visitors to Sekotong, Gili Nanggu is a highlight. To get here, you'll need to board an island hopping tour. These can be arranged from your accommodation in Sekotong or alternatively booked online.

Gili Nanggu is known for its incredible snorkeling without the hectic Gili-T vibes. Here you will find healthy corals and huge schools of fish. Visiting Gili Nanggu is a must for anyone looking for the best beaches in Sekotong.

When you book a Gili Nanggu boat tour online, a car transfer from Senggigi or Kuta Lombok is actually included. If you haven't arrived in Sekotong yet then this is a great deal as you don't have to pay for a car to get here and you can arrange for the tour operator to take you to your new accommodation in Sekotong or back to other parts of Lombok.

4. Mekaki Beach

My personal favorite beach in Lombok is Mekaki Beach. This is located on the south coast of Sekotong and requires a 30-minute scooter ride through the villages and mountain roads that make up central Sekotong.

Mekaki Beach stretches around Mekaki Bay and ends at a rugged cliff. You can easily spend hours exploring the beach, walking from one end to the other and swimming in the clear, turquoise waters. The sand is incredibly soft and there's even a pretty good surf break here.

In my opinion, if you just want to visit one of the best Sekotong beaches, Mekaki Beach is the best! It is also within easy reach of another hidden gem: Nambung Beach Waterfall, a saltwater waterfall phenomenon that is well worth a visit!

Because this reign is somewhat hidden. To save money on transportation, I would recommend staying a few nights in this largely unexplored part of Lombok, Indonesia to see the best things to do. Here are my top tips for budget accommodation.
