Admission to Venice: 100 euros against over-tourism!

Venice is facing a crucial measure to combat overtourism. The city is discussing the introduction of an entry fee of 100 euros per visitor. This project was initiated by Setrak Tokatzian, president of the Piazza San Marco association, who expressed concern about the type of tourists that the lagoon city attracts. Tokatzian criticized the fact that many of these tourists spend little money and often make do with simple food.

At a time when Venice is increasingly suffering from the consequences of overtourism, Tokatzian speaks of an “explosion of overtourism”. His specific proposal to reduce the number of visitors and protect the city is to introduce a high entrance fee. This strategy could prove necessary to curb tourist oversaturation and put the city on a more sustainable path.

Already existing regulatory measures

So far, Venice has already taken steps to regulate the rush to the city. This year, between mid-April and the end of July, a daily fee of five euros was charged for early bird visitors and ten euros for spontaneous visitors. This measure proved successful and brought the city around 5.4 million euros. Nevertheless, it is clear that previous approaches are not sufficient to meet the challenges of overtourism in the long term.

The discussion about the new entrance fee is part of a broader plan to reduce the tourist burden on Venice while promoting the quality of the visiting experience. The aim is to protect the city as a cultural heritage and to focus on sustainable tourism.

Visitors to Venice will therefore have to prepare for potentially new regulations that could impact not only the number of travelers, but also the type of tourism that is encouraged in the city. It remains to be hoped that these measures can maintain the balance between tourism and the preservation of Venice's cultural values.
