Later, around the year 800, Abbot Ratgar had a church and monastery built on this mountain, which were dedicated to the Mother of God in 809. This was the origin of the monastery, which is now deeply rooted in Fulda's history.

History and inclusion

The mountain on which the Frauenberg monastery is located was known as “Bischofsberg” until the 13th century. Since then it has been called “Mountain of Our Lady”, which is also popularly known as “Frauenberg”. The Franciscans came to Fulda in 1237, eleven years after the death of St. Francis of Assisi. They built a church and monastery in the city in 1246 and lived there for over 300 years.

Visitor Information

For those interested, there are regular guided tours that start every Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the entrance to the monastery church. Admission for adults is €9.00, while schoolchildren, students and the severely disabled pay €7.00. During a visit, guests can not only delve deep into the history of the monastery, but also experience the impressive architecture of the baroque church.
