Earthquake strikes in Marmaris: 70 injured and one death!

On the night of Tuesday, June 3, 2025, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Turkey's Aegean coast, with the epicenter about 20 kilometers south of Marmaris. According to information from the ADAC, around 70 people were injured as a result, with the majority of injuries resulting from falls caused by panic. Tragically, a 14-year-old girl in Fethiye died after a panic attack, highlighting the drama of the situation.

The tremors were also felt on the Greek islands of Rhodes and Kos as well as on Santorini, but did not cause any significant damage or injuries there. Minor structural damage was reported in Marmaris, with cracks found in several houses, but no significant damage to buildings or infrastructure. Turkey's Interior Ministry confirmed that the Mugla region, a popular tourist destination, suffered no serious damage.

Travel information and safety

It is advisable for travelers on the Turkish Aegean coast to obtain up-to-date information from their tour operators or hotels. The Foreign Office has not yet issued a travel warning for Marmaris and the surrounding areas. However, travelers should be prepared that fear of further earthquakes alone is not enough to justify canceling their trips free of charge.

Package holidaymakers in particular benefit from special regulations: They can cancel their bookings free of charge if there are “unavoidable, extraordinary circumstances” at the holiday destination. Individual travelers often find it more difficult to claim free cancellations, especially when flights and accommodations remain available.

Recommendations for vacationers

The consumer advice center advises travelers to keep an eye on the situation and to find out about the latest updates from the Federal Foreign Office and their tour operators. Enabling “Cell Broadcast Alerts” on cell phones is recommended to be alerted in the event of an emergency. The need to contact travel providers directly to obtain information about the current situation is also highlighted.

The Mugla province attracts over three million tourists every year, including more than 200,000 Germans who stay in coastal towns such as Marmaris and Bodrum. The situation following the earthquake remains tense and holidaymakers should be vigilant and take precautionary measures where necessary.

In the long term, the safety of holidaymakers is of key importance for the affected regions, especially in a country that is regularly affected by earthquakes. Travel warnings could change at short notice, which is why constant monitoring of the situation remains important.
