For those visiting Jaipur, the incredible Amer Fort (Amber Fort) is undoubtedly one of the city's top must-see attractions. While the beautiful and fascinating historical Mughal-Rajput architecture of the fort itself is stunning, for me the “Jaipur Wall” was the most underrated attraction in Jaipur.
This many kilometer long stone wall, often referred to as the “Amer Wall” or even the “Great Wall of Amer”, follows the rugged ridges of the Aravalli Mountains and served as the first line of defense for the Amer Fort and the city of Jaipur for hundreds of years.
When I was researching things to do in Jaipur, I noticed that there were hundreds of excellent guides for exploring the fort, but not much information about the Jaipur Wall. So if you're looking for arguably the best view in Jaipur AND the best sunset spot, head to Amer and climb the Jaipur Wall!

Where is the Jaipur Wall?
The Jaipur Wall stretches along the mountain ridges adjacent to the Amer Fort (Amber Fort), about 12 kilometers north of Jaipur Junction. The entrance to the Jaipur Wall is right next to the fort entrance in Amer, where some stairs lead up.
Since the Jaipur Wall is also located in Amer, it would be a good idea to visit the fort in the day/afternoon and then climb the wall at sunset.
Arrival to Amer Fort
Since most people who visit Jaipur stay somewhere near Bani Park or Pink City, you will need to arrange transportation to get to Amer Fort. There is a large parking lot and a bus stop directly opposite the entrance to the fort. This is where you need to go to climb the wall.
Returning to Jaipur is not a problem as dozens of rickshaws and regular buses leave near the entrance.
Transportation options
Below I have listed some standard options to get to Amer Fort and Wall from Jaipur.
Rickshaw: You can take a rickshaw pretty much anywhere in Jaipur to take you to Amer Fort. Expect to pay around 200-250 rupees one way. Most rickshaw drivers will probably try to convince you to take a tour once you're there.
Uber: Using Uber to get from A to B is a good option for reliable and affordable transportation. The cost from Jaipur to Amer is usually between 250 and 350 rupees for a one-way trip.
Amer Fort Tour with Transfer: If you prefer a guided tour of Amer Fort, this walking tour with rickshaw transfer is a good choice for around $19. This trip includes hotel pickup/drop-off, an English-speaking guide at the fort, and a stop at the famous stepwell of Panna Meena ka Kund.
Bus to Amer Fort: There are regular buses that depart from Hawa Mahal in the old town. These cost just 15 rupees one way or 25 rupees for an air-conditioned bus. This is the best option for travelers on a budget.
Rent a Motorbike: This is probably the least popular option for travelers in Jaipur. However, if you want to explore the forts on the outskirts of the city, you can save some money by renting a motorbike or scooter. Expect to pay 300-400 rupees per day for the cheapest motorcycle rental.

Entrance fee for Amer Fort
Visiting Amer Fort costs 500 rupees for foreigners and 100 rupees for Indians. This includes entry to all attractions and sights within the fort.
You can buy a ticket in the large courtyard near the entrance to the fortress.
However, note that climbing the Jaipur Wall is free for epic views of the mountains, Jaipur city and Amer Fort. This is because visitors access it from outside the fort.

Amer Fort takes its name from the Ambika temple or the Shiva temple called Ambikeshwar. It is also a World Heritage Site.
About the Great Wall of Amer
The Rajput rulers built the architecturally brilliant; The “Great Wall of Amer” is intended to serve as a line of defense for the Amer Fort and the city from invaders. The construction of the fort and the wall began in 1592 by the then ruling Maharaja Man Singh.
It is not known exactly how long the wall is, as best estimates suggest only 50% of the wall remains. However, the Amer Wall is often referred to as the third longest wall in the world. This puts it behind Kumbhalgarh Fort (also in Rajasthan) and of course behind the Great Wall of China.
The wall follows the ridgeline of the mountains above Amer to create a compelling and impenetrable defense that has clearly withstood the test of time. Built primarily from stone blocks, the Jaipur Wall also includes tall watchtowers where guards kept watch for invading forces.

Climbing the Jaipur Wall
Do you want to have the best view and sunset in Jaipur? Climbing the Jaipur Wall is by far the most stunning and spectacular scenery you can experience in the Rajasthani capital.
The entrance to the staircase that winds up to the top of the Jaipur Wall is very easy to see from the fort entrance. The stairs are very steep. You have to climb some of them to get to the top. But trust me when I say it's worth it.
