Extra shift 2025: Discover the Ruhr area in a new light!

This year's Extraschicht will take place on June 28, 2025, a cultural festival that, in its 23rd edition, offers an experience for all art and culture lovers in the Ruhr area. Organized by Ruhr Tourismus GmbH, 35 venues in 18 cities will open their doors on this occasion and enable visitors to discover the diversity of the region from new perspectives. The event starts at 6:00 p.m. and ends at 2:00 a.m.

This year, guests will be treated to a diverse program of art, music, light installations, performances and live music. The planned attractions include light displays, various shows, acrobatics and live music. The time-honored industrial facilities, including the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein in Essen and the Fürst Leopold in Dorsten, will shine in colorful light. Particularly noteworthy is the co-production in the Flottmann Halls and the Sculpture Park in Herne, where Urbanatix and Theater Kohlenpott will present an acrobatic show with dance and juggling.

New venues and returnees in the program

The new venues include the Kampfbahn Glückauf in Gelsenkirchen, where tours and talks with former Schalke legends are offered, and Speicher100 in Dortmund, a creative space for live music, painting, photography and video art. In addition, several well-known locations such as the German Mining Museum Bochum, the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum and the Dortmund U - Center for Art and Creativity are returning to the program.

Things get particularly exciting at the main train stations in Bochum and Essen. An open-air basketball arena with a 3×3 tournament is expected in Bochum, while gospel and pop music will be played in Essen. As a grand finale, impressive fireworks displays are planned at many venues.

Tickets and arrival

An early bird ticket is available for 15 euros until May 15, 2025, after which regular advance booking costs 22 euros and 25 euros at the box office. Children under six years of age have free entry. The ticket price not only includes access to all venues, but also use of the shuttle buses that run between the stations from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., as well as free travel on public transport until 7 a.m. the following day.

The introduction of an Extrashift app will help visitors learn about the program and view site occupancy. There will also be reports on the local time Rhine/Ruhr on WDR2 and the local time Ruhr on WDR television at 7:30 p.m. Last year around 150,000 people visited the Extraschicht, making it one of the largest cultural events in the region.

Now is the opportunity for anyone interested to secure their tickets: Extraschicht 2025 promises an unforgettable experience in the Ruhr area, where art, culture and community are celebrated.
