Extra 1 2025: Discover the Ruhr area in a new light!

Ruhrgebiet, Deutschland - On June 28, 2025, this year's extra layer will take place, a cultural festival that offers an experience for all art and cultural lovers in the Ruhr area in the 23rd edition. Organized by Ruhr Tourismus GmbH, 35 venues open their doors in 18 cities and enable visitors to discover the variety of the Region from new perspectives. The event starts at 6:00 p.m. and ends at 2:00 a.m.

This year, guests will be spoiled with a varied program of art, music, light installations, performances and live music. The planned attractions include lighting scenes, various shows, acrobatics and live music. The time-honored industrial plants, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Essen and the Prince Leopold in Dorsten, will shine in colorful light. Particularly noteworthy is the co-production in the Flottmann halls and in the sculpture park in Herne, where Urbanatix and Theater Kohlenpott will present an acrobatic show with dance and juggling.

The new venues include the Glückauf fight in Gelsenkirchen, where tours and talks with former Schalke legends are offered, as well as the Speicher100 in Dortmund, a creative space for live music, painting, photography and video art. In addition, several well-known locations are returning to the program such as the German Mining Museum of Bochum, the Century Hall Bochum and the Dortmund U-Center for Art and Creativity.

It gets particularly exciting at the main train stations in Bochum and Essen. In Bochum, an open-air basketball arena is expected with a 3 × 3 tournament, while gospel and pop music are heard in Essen. Impressive fireworks are planned as the crowning glory at many venues.

An early booklet ticket is available for 15 euros by May 15, 2025, after which the regular advance sale costs 22 euros and at the box office 25 euros. Children under the age of six have free admission. The ticket price not only includes access to all venues, but also the use of the shuttle buses that commute between the stations from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., as well as the free travel in local public transport until 7:00 a.m. on the following day.

The introduction of an extra layer app will help visitors to find out more about the program and to call up the load load. In addition, reports on the local time Rhein/Ruhr on WDR2 and the local time Ruhr on WDR television at 7:30 p.m. In the previous year, around 150,000 people visited the extra layer, which has thus become one of the largest cultural events in the region.
