Air tickets: Expensive airport summer 2025 threatens travelers!
The prices for airline tickets from German airports could continue to rise in the coming year. According to a current assessment by Peter Gerber, President of the Federal Association of German Airlines (BDF), it will definitely not be cheaper. Gerber cites rising state location costs as a decisive factor for the expected price increases. In particular, the announced price increases for air traffic control, security fees and airport fees are likely to be noticeable for passengers. However, concrete forecasts regarding the level of price increases remain vague.
Demand for package holidays remains stable, despite persistent forecasts that this type of travel is becoming extinct. Gerber emphasizes that package tours represent an important guarantee of safety, especially for families. Flights to the USA in particular are currently cheap for passengers, but demand from Germany to the USA fell by 15 percent.
Rising ticket prices in summer 2025
Ticket prices for air travel from German airports will also rise in the summer of 2025, as a price analysis by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) shows. High government fees, tax increases and a shortage of flights are the main reasons for this increase. This trend can be observed not only among traditional airlines, but also among low-cost airlines.
The average one-way ticket prices from four main providers were recorded on March 11, 2025 and show the following developments:
| Provider | Current price | Price last year |
|---|---|---|
| Wizz Air | 67 euros | – |
| Ryanair | 80 euros | 66 euros |
| EasyJet | 86 euros | 84 euros |
| Eurowings | 130 euros | 110 euros |
Wizz Air offers the cheapest prices in the German market. Tickets booked at short notice are significantly more expensive and range from 119 to 169 euros. In comparison, the average prices for bookings three months in advance are between 46 euros (Ryanair) and 90 euros (Eurowings).
Market analysis of low-cost airlines
Especially in the German low-cost segment, Eurowings dominates with a market share of around 39% for the winter of 2025. Overall, Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet together have around 89.8% of the German low-cost market. The share of low-cost air traffic in Germany is around 21% overall, while domestic air traffic only accounts for 15%. State taxes are particularly high in Germany, with an average of 74 euros in Frankfurt/Main, while the general average is 52 euros.
The ADAC recommends travelers book early, check alternative airports, compare prices and consider flights close to the border to benefit from possible savings.
