Hamburg’s new hybrid ferry Grasbrook”: Finally arrived!
The new hybrid ferry “Grasbrook” has now reached the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. However, their long journey home was accompanied by significant delays: the ferry arrived six months late, mainly due to technical problems and a long wait for replacement components. The takeover by Hadag will take place on May 22nd and the ferry has been in operation since last week.
The transfer was originally scheduled for December after the launch took place on September 23rd. A barge was used to transport the ferry because the water level in the Elbe was low. The costs for the “Grasbrook” amount to 8.5 million euros. In addition to this ship, Hadag also owns two other hybrid ships: “Neuland”, which was christened in September, and “Finkenwerder”, which arrived in October.
Technical innovations and environmentally friendly drive
All three ships in the Hadag fleet are equipped with a modern plug-in hybrid drive. This technology makes it possible to charge the batteries at night at the Hamburg fish market. The electric drive is used during docking and doffing, while the diesel engine is used while driving. This is intended to support the decarbonization of the fleet - a goal that is already anchored in the coalition agreement between the SPD and the Greens.
The propulsion systems of the “Grasbrook” consist of two 5-bladed eVSP 9X5/100, each with 200 kW, which provide the necessary thrust and enable a maximum speed of up to 13 knots. These eVSPs are equipped with permanent magnet electric motors from the Voith Turbo subsidiary ELIN Motoren, which offer a low-noise and low-emission solution. This not only ensures a high level of comfort on board, but it also significantly reduces energy requirements and guarantees optimal maneuverability, even under difficult conditions in the port of Hamburg.
The christening of the ferry “Grasbrook” is planned for mid-July, and the anticipation of another modern and environmentally friendly means of transport in Hamburg is already noticeable.
