Donauradweg: high -precision counting technology for more bicycle traffic and tourism!
on the Danube Cycle Path take place, which should benefit both the infrastructure and tourism. The ARGE DONAU AUSTRO AND VIADONAU have renewed current cycling points on the popular Danube Cycle Path. In this context, modern tent Evo counting devices were installed, which enable the cycling traffic precisely. These developments are part of an ongoing project that has been promoted by WGD Donau Oberösterreich Tourismus GmbH and Donau Niederösterreich Tourismus since 2010 in cooperation with the relevant authorities. The new equipment replaces outdated counting points to ensure greater accuracy in traffic recording.
The new counting devices, provided by Eco Counter, are independent of network and are characterized by a high counting accuracy. Five counting points were renewed in Upper Austria, while in Lower Austria ten counts and two additional counting devices around Krems were installed. A total of 19 locations along the Danube path between Passau and Vienna are now monitored, including two new counting points that are equipped with speed measurements. The installation of the counting points was carried out by GPV-Günther Pichler GmbH and is supported by the Federal Ministry of Labor and Economy as well as Viadonau.
meaning of the data
The data collected from this comprehensive survey are of great importance for the planning and further development of the infrastructure of the Danube Cycle Path. They also enable an assessment of the effects of marketing measures and the economic importance of the cycle path. Viadonau will use the determined figures to carry out maintenance measures on the Treppelweg. The bicycle traffic is currently experiencing a boom, which also underlines the importance of this data. The cycling counts will be continued in 2025 after a one -year break.
A similar request is followed by the Movebis project in Hesse, which has been recorded anonymized traffic data since 2017 as part of the city cycling campaign. Since 2022, 270 permanent counting points have been installed for bicycle traffic nationwide, which are operated by various institutions such as counties and cities. The installation uses induction loops to record cyclists. The technical details and the future prospects of the counting points in Hesse are designed for a systematic further development of the wheel network and the implementation of targeted measures, which are later evaluated. The project is financed from the integrated climate protection plan Hessen and has total costs of around 3.6 million euros.
Overall, it can be seen that the recording of representative traffic data is crucial for the planning and development of cycling in Germany and Austria. The experiences from these projects will help to promote the use of the bicycle as a sustainable means of transportation and thus make a contribution to climate protection. It remains to be seen which further steps will be taken in the future to further improve the wheel infrastructure.
