High fine in Italy: Tires with the wrong speed index cost up to 1,734 euros!
From May 16, 2025, strict regulations for car tires will come into force in Italy, which could particularly affect holidaymakers. In this context, it was found that many drivers are not sufficiently informed about the new regulations. As the Swabian Reportedly, in Italy there are speed limits of a maximum of 50 km/h in urban areas and a maximum of 90 km/h outside of urban areas.
Violating speed regulations can be costly for drivers. Even exceeding the speed limit by 10 km/h can cost up to 159 euros. Further regulations are anchored in the so-called “speed index”, which applies to all motor vehicles registered in Germany, but not to motorcycles. This regulation affects a large number of cars and trailers that travel on Italian roads.
Tire regulations and fines
In particular, using tires with an incorrect speed index can have serious consequences. In Italy it is not allowed to use tires with a lower speed index than stated in the vehicle registration document. If a driver violates this regulation, they face fines of between 431 and 1,734 euros. It is necessary to check the tire name carefully, as the speed index, the last letter after the tire size, indicates what maximum speed the tire can safely handle.
For example, a tire with the designation “205/55 R 16 91V” is considered legitimate if the speed index “V” is entered in the vehicle registration document, which means a maximum permissible speed of 240 km/h. Tires with a lower speed index, such as “R” (170 km/h) or “P” (150 km/h), are banned and can result in hefty fines, they said SWP.
Preventive measures for travelers
Travelers planning to travel to Italy by car should carefully check their vehicle's tires beforehand. It is advisable to match the letters on the tires with the information on the vehicle registration document to avoid fines and possible vehicle confiscation. For example, if the speed index “S” is entered in the vehicle registration document, only tires with the index “S” or higher may be installed.
To avoid unpleasant surprises and costly penalties while vacationing in Italy, thorough knowledge of tire specifications is essential. Tourists and locals alike are encouraged to find out about the legal requirements and ensure that their vehicles meet the requirements.
