Ivan Evans Walk, Waddlebla Peak & Boiboi Peak - Cairns hiking guide
Ivan Evans Walk, Waddlebla Peak & Boiboi Peak - Cairns hiking guide
A quick hiking guide to extend the Ivan Evans Walk in Cairns to Waddlebla Peak and Boiboi Peak on the Waddlebla Trail.
The Ivan Evans Walk is a popular hike among the locals of Cairns who are looking for a quick walk near the city. However, the Ivan Evans Trail itself is quite short and in itself not a big adventure. For this reason, I decided to combine the Ivan Evans Walk with the steeper Waddlebla Trail up to the Boi Boi Peak and the Waddlebla Peak. This made it a much more challenging, more scenic and more worthwhile hike - but without leaving a lot of view.
Note that there are dozens of ways that lead through the dense rainforest of the Ellen Close Reserve, and many of them are mountain bike routes. Please respect that many of these trails have been created and managed by mountain bikers. I am sure that you don't mind share your trails, but hikers and trail runners should avoid you and stay watchful and look for downhill drivers.
For the purposes of this blog, I will outline the route that I took to the Boiboi Peak and Waddlebla Peak. If you want, however, you can choose alternative routes or end the hike earlier as soon as you have reached the Waddlebla Peak near the Lake Morris Road.
Where is the Ivan Evans Walk Trailhead?
The Ivan Evans Walk begins at the end of Ellen Close, a suburbs in the suburb of BayView Heights from Cairns. The starting point of the hiking trail is only about 10 kilometers from the coast of Cairns and only requires a short 15-minute drive.
As soon as you have driven up to the end of Ellen Close, park your car and look for the guide on the lawn on the right side of the dead end.

About the Ivan Evans Walk and the Waddlebla Trail
Hiking route: 7-8 km
Duration (depending on the route)
~ 600 altitude
Difficulty (section steep)
Since there is not a single route or route to the peaks Boiboi or Waddlebla, I will simply go through my route and experience on the way to help you plan your hike. The first section follows the popular Ivan Evans Walk before making a detour to a path signposted as a "service track". However, it is only the beginning of a network of mountain bike routes that lead to Lake Morris Road.
From the Lake Morris Road you have to walk a few hundred meters before you get back to the Boiboi Peak Trail.
As I mentioned above, hikers and trail runners should look for mountain bikers and avoid them (take out headphones).

Here is a GPX card that I recorded with my Garmin clock. If you want, you can download the GPX track by clicking on the link below.

IVAN EVANS WALK
The Ivan Evans Trail is a pleasant path through the Ellen Close Reserve, which connects Ellen Close with the Toogood Road with a small viewpoint in the middle. The route is only 2.4 kilometers long and easy to follow. It is also not too steep, which makes it a good walk when you are looking for something simple or quick.
After about 600 meters (about halfway when you go to the toogood road) you come to a viewpoint. This is known as Boiboi’s Lookout, but was really not that impressive. Not to be confused with the equally inconspicuous Boiboi Peak.
If you want to go to the Waddlebla Peak and Boiboi Peak, you have to turn left at this viewpoint.

Waddlebla-Trail
Although not signposted, the change of path to the Waddlebla Track is obviously. The path becomes dramatically steeper at the beginning of the ascent.
Although there are not many good views at all due to the dense wine tendrils and the rainforest, the Waddlebla Trail ensures a pleasant climb with sections of light, rocky terrain. However, do not underestimate the steepness, especially if you have injured yourself.

There is a highlight just before the Lake Morris Road, where the most exciting features are a wooden shield nailed to a tree and an old, dilapidated tree house.

If you continue the same way, you will soon come out on the Lake Morris Road. You can end the hike here or go up the Lake Morris Road and pay attention to cars and cyclists after 600 meters to find the next starting point. You can also go a little further to reach the White Rock Trailhead, which offers one of the best viewpoints in the area.
Boiboi-Track
The starting point of the Boiboi Peak is located on the right side of the Lake Morris Road, 600 meters above the Waddlebla Trail. It is not immediately apparent and not signposted. However, you should have no problems finding the route compared to a wide, grass-covered clearing shortly before the Dogleg return on the street.
The Boiboi Peak Track is less steep than the Waddlebla track and is not used by mountain bikers (as far as I know). You may also notice that the rainforest is denser and tropical, with some tree crash and a lot of waiting time.

Finally, you can reach the Waddlebla Peak, even though you are excused when you miss it. Really, it is as anti -climate -like as the rest of the hike. However, if you take this walk, you were already aware of it. Instead, find a reward in the rest of the remote paths through the lush tropical forest.
This path continues for another kilometer on a similar climb before reaching the Boi Boi Peak, the highest point of this hike. Again, but not surprising - no view in sight.
From here I decided to turn around and go back to Ellen Close. However, this path continues for another 2 kilometers while he descends to Redlynch. A good option, if you want to go on, would be to go in Redlynch after the walk to the Crystal Cascades and Fairy Faller FAIRS FAILY FAILY FAILS FAIR FAILS FAIR FAIL Alt = "Waddlebla Trail Cairns">
Kehre back to Ellen Close
From the highest point on Boiboi Peak I went back the same way. On one of the mountain bike routes on the Waddlebla Trail, I was turned wrongly, as you can see on the GPX card, which made me curve to Vine Close right around the corner.
