Just a few minutes walk from the Clocktower Market (Sardar Market & Ghanta Ghar) is the underrated Jodhpur Stepwell, also known as Toorji Ka Jhalra or Toorji’s Step Well. If you are in Jodhpur and looking for things to do, I would recommend it as a quick side trip.
It is said to have been constructed in Jodhpur in the early 1740s by the queen consort of Maharaja Abhay Singh. What I found fascinating was the fact that the Jodhpur Stepwell appeared to have been buried for many years and was only recently restored to its former glory.

How to get to Jodhpur Stepwell (Toorji Ka Jhalra).
Jodhpur Stepwell is just 350 meters from the Clocktower Market (Ghanta Ghar). Despite being so close to the central hub of Jodhpur, finding the stepwell can be a bit confusing.
Actually, I knew I wanted to visit this attraction before I arrived in Jodhpur, but I ended up stumbling upon it by accident. If you are trying to find the stepwell of Toorji Ka Jhalra, start from the Clock Tower Market and insert the Google Maps pin below.

What to Expect at Jodhpur Stepwell
Immediately after arriving at the Jodhpur Stepwell on a spontaneous detour, I was struck by how detailed and symmetrical the Stepwell architects' work was.
The architects and designers built the Toorji Ka Jhalra using classic Jodhpur sandstone, popular in the old city. It also has similar diamond-shaped steps to other well-known stepwells in Rajasthan, such as the one in Jaipur.
The steps lead down to a very deep, cut-out pool that once served as an important source of water for the people of Jodhpur.
I noticed that there was a local security guard roaming the tops of the Jodhpur stepwell. However, he didn't seem to mind that groups of children and teenagers were jumping from the steps into the deep, cool water below. Red Bull even showcased Toorji's stepwell at a cliff diving event in 2019!
While the Toorji Ka Jhalra is one of the many important historical monuments in Jodhpur, it makes me happy to see that locals still enjoy the fountain in a similar way to when it was built.
Jodhpur stepwell timings run throughout the day. Anyone can visit the Toorji Ka Jhalra at any time of the day, take photos and even go swimming - if you feel like it.

Stepwell Cafe Jodhpur at Step Well Square
The Step Well Square in Jodhpur is the area where you will find the Jodhpur Stepwell. Since it was renovated, cleared and restored, many shops, restaurants and cafés have sprung up. That said, I definitely don't blame them for taking the opportunity to exploit the tourism potential.
The most popular cafe; the Stepwell Cafe, is a place where visitors can get a good overview of the Community Step. Although I didn't check it, I noticed that it was almost full to the brim! This was the case on both occasions that I visited the Jodhpur Stepwell. So if you go out to eat, let me and the other travelers know how it was!
